Mr and Mrs Michael Kerrigan of Sycamore Lane Monroe announce the birth of their first child a daughter Summer Michelle weighing seven pounds four ounces born Sunday on her father s birthday. George Carl Addison of Sterlington attended a Chattanooga reunion of Sixth Cavalry members from World War II Maj Gen George S Patton III lectured as guest speaker Addison was the sole Northeast Louisiana attendee.
The unemployment rate increased to 7.5 percent in June, up 0.2 point, marking the largest monthly rise since the recession last year. The report could complicate President Ford's political position as he defends his economic policies amid rising joblessness.
Labor Department figures show 280,000 more unemployed in June, total 7.1 million, while employed fell by 200,000 to 87.5 million. Unemployment rose across most groups, including adults and teens, with average duration up to 16.9 weeks. The labor force steadied at about 94.6 million.
Officials warn Boaters and swimmers to use extreme caution during the Fourth of July holidays as drownings in Ouachita Parish rise. Deputies will patrol highways and the river. flotation devices and proper boating rules urged.
The Associated Press finds June shoppers paid more for a 15 item market basket in most of 13 cities. Overall June rise about 1.3 percent, still below 1976 projections, with May showing stronger gains.

The Supreme Court upheld capital punishment laws in Georgia Texas and Florida while striking down North Carolina and Louisiana mandatory schemes that remove discretion from juries and judges. The decision was 5 to 4.
Vicksburg Mississippi marks the 200th birthday of the nation with two minutes of bells on Sunday. The city recalls 1863 siege when Vicksburg fell to Grant after a long blockade and starvation. Mayor Nat Bullard notes the day has not been a celebration in town.
The schedule lists a parade, flag raising, speeches by Lt Gov Jimmy Fitzmorris and Rep Otto E Passman, motor cross races, tug of war, fire hose fight, bicycle and sack races, a countdown ball, water show and repeated Louisiana Legend 76 performances at venues in West Monroe Forsythe Park Cheniere Lake Lazarre Point and Monroe Civic Center with times from morning to night.
All city parish state and federal offices shut Monday for the Fourth of July. Postal deliveries halt except for specials. Offices reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m. Chennault Park and other recreation areas to stay open July 5. City buses run July 5 but not July 4. City Hall closed Monday. police and fire services remain active.
