At Fort Rosecrans California Master Sergeant Frank Newton displayed a submarine rescue concept using radio buoy SOS beacons and a steel diving chamber. The chamber holds 20 cubic feet of oxygen at 2000 psi with lime to absorb CO2 and allows occupants to maintain surface air pressure for rapid ascent.
Sir Henry John Delves Broughton, 57, WWI veteran, acquitted of murder in the death of the Earl of Erroll, Scotland Yard’s chief in Kenya Colony. The verdict came after a three and a half hour jury deliberation in a historic colonial court.

Fifty one United States Marines arrive under Captain John B. Hill to assume guard duties at the U S embassy in London. They will be quartered outside the city briefly before billets near the embassy, relieving London police. Survivors from the Dutch steamer Maarsden, transporting Marines and Red Cross nurses, are expected. some were feared lost with rescue reported by the U S Navy.
Henry Leonard Chancey a 24 year old railway mail clerk is jailed in Macon Georgia on a charge of theft of thirty thousand dollars from the mail. He tells officers he may have taken the money while sleeping and led them to a field eight miles from Macon to reveal the money buried in a shallow hole.
German forces and Finnish troops launch new advances as the German press reports 100000 Soviet troops captured and hundreds of tanks and field guns seized or destroyed. Reports claim advances toward Moscow and Leningrad are halted while Riga and Viipuri area actions are noted. General Wavell is reassigned to India amid defense speculations.
The $800000 charity hospital near Monroe opens its doors with Governor Sam H Jones and Dr James N Snee in attendance. Initial capacity 140 beds, potential 175, own power plant, laundry and morgue, staffed by 120, aided by an evolving facility near Louisiana Training Institute.
Baton Rouge July 2 Federal relief funds owed for July have not arrived. Beirūt Lebanon July 2 the French mandate government protests to the American government against what is described as terroristic British bombardments of Beirut.
American fliers in the Eagle Squadron credited with three of 17 German planes reportedly downed in daylight raids on Northern France. Royal Air Force forces crossed the channel, while a night attack at Brest was said to straddle a German battleship. News from Moscow notes Soviet gratitude for American statements on the Russian war.
The House Ways and Means Committee drafted a $3.5044 billion tax bill, above its goal by 4.4 million, with tentative raises to the capital stock tax to $1.25 per $1,000, a 10 percent excise tax on cutlery, higher withholding on non resident aliens and foreign corporations, and revised penny and merchandise vending machine taxes. Chairman Doughton announced further actions.
