Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey is chosen as the Democratic standard bearer. He sends a special message to the General Assembly urging passage of measures behind legislation.
Louisiana Governor L. E. Hall urges the House to approve amendments to the primary election law to protect ballot secrecy and opposes changes. He also asks support for Clayton fertilizer measures transferring control to the experiment station and discusses feedstuff issues. The message condemns grandfather clauses and proposes two-person assistance at polling places.
Governor Woodrow Wilson secures the Democratic presidential nomination at the Baltimore convention after a lengthy deadlock. The forty-sixth ballot yields Wilson 990, Clark 84, Harmon 12 with the nomination made by acclamation amid cheers as states shift to Wilson.
Miss Harriet Quimby of New York the first American licensed woman aviator and first woman to cross the English Channel perished with passenger W A P Willard manager of the Boston Aviation meet when her Bleriot monoplane plunged into Dorchester Bay from about a thousand feet tonight.
The new police jury conducted a lengthy meeting and approved tighter controls on supplies, prisoner feeding, and bills. The clerk was ordered to establish a modern accounting system. Judge Madison will sign only legally required warrants. Durden was re elected road overseer and a road review committee was formed for the parish. A renewed demand on Dixie Lumber to restore the road from Chenier swamp was approved.
At Atlantic City on July 2 the Akron dirigible exploded in midair during a test flight. Builder Melvin Vaniman Calvin Vaniman and Fred Elmer were killed along with crew member George Bourtillion. The blast, blamed on gas expansion from sun exposure, sank the craft and victims off Brigantine beach as life savers search for remains.
Judge Walter R Staples arrived in Wytheville to prepare for Circuit Court opening tomorrow Claude Allen to stand trial a second time for murder linked to the Hillsville courtroom tragedy on March 14 during which four court officials and a bystander were killed Allen has already been convicted on one indictment and sentenced to fifteen years in the penitentiary A venire from Washington county has been summoned as local jurors cannot be secured
Washington on July 1 Naval officers filed retirements reducing the compulsory retirement list to twelve. The officers include Captains James Parker on court martial duty in New York R M Hughes commanding the Washington John E Graven at the Naval War College Wilson W Buchanan commanding the Ohio Guy W Brown commanding the receiving ship at Mare Island Albert L Key on leave and Commander William G Miller under hospital care.
Albert Spaulding a V S P road switchman was shot five times and died after a quarrel with Allen a Monroe Grocer driver over Mrs John Breard Jr Allen was arrested at the scene and charged with murder The shooting occurred in front of the Dronioe Grocery Company and Mrs Breard narrowly escaped being hit
A city judge's endorsement on commitment papers for Juber Price was misread by bystanders, one noting it read Por Being Demente and another as Por Being Democrat. A Black man was taken to the sheriff and jailed in the parish prison.
Ford Cook, a well known Monroe resident, died yesterday at his home in the city's eastern part. He ran a barber business in Monroe for many years and once served on the city council. A marble tablet in the courthouse bears his name.
