Joseph Stewart age 70 died at his home in Washington after a lengthy illness. He served 47 years in the post office department and for years led all statistical work and supervised legal affairs. Stewart was a key advisor to postmasters general and an important figure in international postal affairs. He had been second assistant postmaster general.

Nicholas Engleman of Philadelphia amateur pilot died near Berlin New Jersey when his plane fell and caught fire.
