The advance sale for Carpentier Dempsey drew 1.25 million in gross receipts and is expected to reach 1.5 million, Tex Rickard announced. Dempsey hid from press in Atlantic City ahead of the Jersey City bout as betting odds fluctuated and aviators were urged not to fly over the arena.
Chicago July 1 The final decision whether railway employes will accept or reject the wage reductions will be referred to a five member committee representing sixteen railway unions. Ninety five percent of the International Brotherhood of Firemen and Oilers voted against the wage cut. One million five hundred thousand workers began reduced wages today as leaders met to decide on action and protest within the framework of preserving transportation channels.
General Pershing today became Chief of Staff of the U S Army, relieving Major General Peyton C March who takes a leave of absence until November retirement. Pershing will oversee large operations and direct organization and training of the National Guard and civilian reserve forces, under plans approved by Secretary Weeks.
Engineers under Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas interests study a $4 to $5 million pipeline network from South Arkansas fields near El Dorado to Arkansas City or Greenville and on toward Memphis. Frank I. Neville of Houston leads the investigations for a proposed syndicate to build lines and an oil refinery with options on Mississippi river sites opposite Memphis.
Representatives of eastern manufacturers have surveyed farms in Northeastern Louisiana and Southern Arkansas to gauge growing garden truck for canning and preserving plants in Pittsburg and other eastern cities. They seek cucumbers for pickles and may set up stations if feasible, though no contracts are signed yet.
Promoter Tex Rickard announces the July 2, 1921 world heavyweight championship bout at Rickard's Arena Jersey City. Dempsey defends against Georges Carpentier before an expected 60,000 fans with a $1.3 million gate and $500,000 purse. tickets range five to fifty dollars and the match follows 12 rounds of three minutes each with eight ounce gloves and a no decision rule under New Jersey law.
The Monroe Rotary Club hosted a lively evening for ladies and college students at the Elk's Club. Miss Undine Livau dias spoke on why girls should pursue education, Rev. E. K. Means on the value of education, with musical solos by Genevra Washburn and toe dancing by Ruby Hood. The Knights of Pythiss provided music, dancing followed, and a fruit punch luncheon was served by Episcopal ladies. the event drew a large, appreciative crowd.
The Monroe Refining Corporation, capitalized at 10 000 dollars, will begin work on a new plant by Tuesday. C E Burdett serves as vice president and C A Prop h it as secretary treasurer. The facility will manufacture gasoline for motor vehicles at the United Oil and Natural Gas Products plant in Cargas with storage and sales on Walnut Street past the ice plant. The venture marks the second such plant in the Monroe field and follows current high gravity gasoline production from absorption plants in Northeastern Louisiana. S M Collins becomes secretary of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, succeeding G T Cross, as Monroe seeks industrial development with broad business support.
The Oscar Nelson Company of Louisiana leads the local field in gasoline production. Sam Wexler, handling the product on Grand Street, reports strong demand. Wexler lowered the price to twenty cents per gallon and expects a Sunday and Fourth of July special at fifteen cents.
The forecast notes tonight and Saturday will be partly cloudy with not much change in temperatures. Skies remain mostly clear enough for outdoor plans, with mild overnight lows and daytime highs hovering near recent averages. Local crews monitor fronts but expect minimal impact through the period.
North Louisiana Agricultural Society held Woman's Day at the Louisiana Experimental Station in Calhoun with Mrs. M Quiller in charge. Mrs. Jewell McQuiller, Monroe, and Mrs. Caroline Staples, Ruston, led demonstrations in pickles and baby care. Prentiss Boyd Jr won best baby. Calhoun beat West Monroe 4 to 3 in a baseball game.
New York on July 1 awoke to a crowded scene as Dempsey and Carpentier dominated conversations in hotel lobbies dining rooms and halls. About 4 000 visiting fans registered yesterday signaling strong interest in the championship bout with many women among the visitors.
W. A. Kirkpatrick of West Monroe travels to New York City for a ten day national Woodmen of the World convention representing Louisiana. Duties at home will be managed by other officials on the west side while the mayor visits various interest points.
Colonel L. R. Powers and his family have returned to Monroe after an extended visit to California. They arrived at 4:05 this morning, having spent February in the Golden Gate state with most time in Long Beach and other coastal points. They traveled back by rail after selling their car in Arizona, citing a healthful and enjoyable trip for all members.
Inspector Robert J. Heap notes lawlessness in petty crimes rose sharply in June, double April and higher than May. June fines reached about $2973.50 with 129 cases tried and $980.50 cash collected for June fines, plus small sums for other months. Summary lists 19 traffic, 16 license tag, 9 drunk and disorderly, 23 fighting, 4 anti vice, and other offenses in June.
