U S forces resumed air attacks on North Viet Nam ending a 37 day lull. Navy and Air Force bombers struck barges, warehouses, and storage facilities as talks to end the conflict stalled.
President Johnson urges an immediate United Nations Security Council meeting to craft a path to the Vietnam peace conference as he resumes bombing of North Vietnam after a wartime pause. He cites continued communist aggression and appeals for Pope Paul VI's call for peace.
A record cold wave and blizzard sweep the East from Florida to Maine causing at least 75 deaths across 16 states. Delaware and Virginia declare emergencies as two feet of snow fall in places, airports close, travel halts in major cities, and power and school disruptions ensue.

Flames reached eight to nine feet, causing minor damage. workers used extinguishers before fire crews arrived. The incident involved a Ne gro helper, per notes from Jerry Maxwell.

The five defendants in the lengthy federal trial were cleared of mail fraud conspiracy and related charges. Earlier the jury had freed Dr Andrew C Ivy Marko Durovic and Dr William F P Phillips who had ties to the drug.
