Ensign Harold Owen Takewell 20 son of Mr and Mrs George Takewell of Monroe was killed when his fighter plane crashed Saturday morning at the naval air station Vero Beach Florida A board of inquiry will investigate the crash He was a Ouachita Parish High School graduate and held various jobs in Monroe before enlisting in the naval air corps He later studied at Northeast Junior College the reserve air base Olathe Kansas the University of Georgia Athens and completed the naval air training center Corpus Christi Texas He was commissioned December 21 He is survived by his parents two brothers Aubrey and Fred Takewell His body will be brought to Missouri Pacific railroad transfer Wednesday for funeral services at the Dixie Funeral Home with Rev L T Hastings officiating
Washington January 31 The House appropriations committee moved to slash FCC funds in the eight and a half billion dollar independent offices supply bill for fiscal year beginning July 1. Rep Taber charged the agency hamstrings the war effort and urged turning FCC radio intelligence functions to War and Navy departments. The panel recommended a one million dollar cut in divisional funds for military radio operations. Baton Rouge proclamation marks USC days February 4 6 honoring the institution and urging support for home away from home clubs.
Allied air power pummeled Berlin and three other cities in a major offensive. U S and British bombers dropped thousands of tons of explosives in daylight and night raids, with reports of great damage and ongoing operations over Pas de Calais.
A Trenton soldier is detained at Fort Dix in the Hunterdon matter linked to six nocturnal shootings around Duck Island in Hamilton township. Police seek a shotgun used in the six murders as a mine detector is prepared to sweep the suspected burial area. The case traces back to 1938 39 and 40 when couples were killed in parked cars with shotgun shells tying the crimes together.
Bennett A. Stephens of corner of South Fifth and Stone was injured when his bakery truck was hit by a northbound Missouri Pacific train at Twenty-fourth street near Forsythe avenue. Bushes blocked his view until 25 to 30 feet away. The truck was dragged about 200 feet and Stephens was treated for a cut and broken nose at St Francis Sanitarium.
At Pearl Harbor the Navy reports a massive second day of bombardment against the Marshall Islands. Admiral Nimitz says surface forces moved close to Kwajalein Maloelap and Wotje to shell shore installations while carrier groups dropped thousands of tons of bombs on the atolls. Envelopment continues as destruction spreads to Eniwetok and nearby targets.
In Charlotte, police seek to prove wrestler Jim Clinstock was strangled with a towel after a violent outburst at a dental lab. Dr. Henry Parker and Lee Sikes face murder warrants as witnesses cite a “Frankenstein” like frenzy before Clinstock fell unconscious. Bond set at 5000 dollars each pending February 11 preliminary hearing.

Washington January 31 The nation marked President Roosevelt s 62nd birthday by attending benefit functions. Proceeds went to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. A $240000 check, from the film Forever and a Day, was presented at the White House by Lady Hardwicke. Crown Prince Olaf and Crown Princess Martha of Norway attended the birthday luncheon.
A Bari conference of Italian political parties urged the abdication of King Vittorio Emanuele and the formation of a new government. The resolution said immediate abdication is essential for Italy’s reconstruction and called for intensified war efforts and urgent reform of liberty and justice.
Washington reports 14 Japanese ships sunk or damaged by American submarines. Two large transports and eight freighters are included in the tally, with targets believed to be in the Marshall Islands. The Navy notes the exact sub attack points were not disclosed.
