Washington reports Japan's war damaged economy wobbly as trade shifts and oil and materials shortages threaten future policy. Officials note drastic steps may follow to stabilize exports to gold paying nations and to curb dislocations in Asia's economic sphere.
The National Safety Council reports 96 500 Americans killed in accidents last year with about 9 100 06 injured or facing economic losses. The 1940 toll rose four percent from 1939, mainly due to air field activity linked to national defense and motor vehicle deaths.
Wendel L. Willkie toured Britain's coastal defenses in London. For security reasons, the Ministry of Information told reporters that details of the visit and what was shown could not be disclosed and the press was excluded.

In San Diego on January 1, a strike at Martinolich Boat Company ended after a federal conciliator brokered a deal. Sixteen workers returned to duty as the agreement set a wage scale akin to the San Pedro Wilmington area and established a union shop. Navy crews kept progress advancing on five vessels during the dispute.
An army board of inquiry investigates a troop train derailment 40 miles northeast of Camp Shelby Mississippi where the fireman was killed and 19 soldiers were injured. Colonel Brooks says the board will compile facts for Atlanta headquarters and a rail split is described as suspicious though friction remains a possible cause.
German daylight raiders attacked England using bomb and machine gun bursts on the Dover and London sky traps amid three air raid alarms. Nazi communique boasted shooting down five balloons near Dover and seven over London while Mussolini’s high command announced Derna fallen to Allied forces.
Private Joseph P. Kline testified that McB. Chaney Jr. struck Private James E. Fahrnkopf behind the ear with a revolver in hand causing a fatal wound. Kline, Fahrnkopf and Private Wayne Smith had a night of drinking before the shooting at the Dew Drop Inn in Bossier City.
Justice James C. McReynolds retires from the U S Supreme Court at midnight ending 28 years of service. He plans no retirement ceremony or interviews and will receive a lifelong $20 000 annual pension. The court is in recess and will resume Monday after his departure.
Col Roscoe Turner, famed speed flier, urged forming an armada of 206,000 converted flivver planes with private pilots for home defense. He said 200,000 planes could be built in 18 months by upgrading 30,000 already in use, with pilots expanded from 45,000. He proposed armament upgrades and government support, comparing costs and potential effectiveness. Turner, a former Thompson Trophy and Bendix winner, runs an air school in Indianapolis.
Wilhelm Kunze national Bund leader and eight associates given one year to 14 months in state prison for violating New Jersey race hatred law. Fines ranged from 1 000 to 2 000 dollars after demurrers challenging constitutionality were overruled by Judge Losey.
Easton Pennsylvania pledges re employment for all men drafted under the selective service act. A citywide program unites small merchants and large manufacturers to back returning soldiers with jobs. The plan, notified to Dr William Mather Lewis Lafayette College president and state selective service head, was developed by the Lafayette board of trade committee led by S Taylor Wilson.

Delta Air announces it has secured authority to operate Atlanta to Cincinnati and Atlanta to Savannah routes. The Cincinnati leg travels 400 miles via Lexington, Kentucky, in about 2 hours 40 minutes, while the Savannah line runs 250 miles via Augusta. New DC aircraft with 21 passenger capacity and 25 000 pound capacity engines will serve the routes, expected to begin in 66 days. Civil Aeronautics Board denies Delta’s request for Cincinnati–New Orleans, while authorizing Eastern Airlines to add Birmingham as a stop on New York–New Orleans route.
