Monroes flood battle widens with levee failures

New English Courses Open At St Francis Sanitarium

Two English study courses will begin soon through Louisiana Tech extension at St Francis Sanitarium Rison. Prof Pankey will lead an English composition class next Monday at 6 20 pm and Prof Sachs will run an English literature survey course on February 10. Classes meet in the sanitarium auditorium with enrollment open for either or both courses and college credit awarded for required grades. A separate note mentions a women’s glider school opened in Germany.

Red Cross Aids Refugees and Levee Workers in West Monroe

More than 1 000 aided as Red Cross and Salvation Army feed refugee families and hundreds of levee workers. A central feeding HQ at Grand and De Siard in West Monroe coordinates meals. Red Cross trucks and volunteers supply sandwiches and coffee while awaiting housing for additional refugees amid rising flood danger along Trenton Street and White's Ferry Road.

Levee Crises Prompt City Aid And Tramway Plan

Water from levee breaches floods major streets in West Monroe with depths up to seven feet under the Illinois Central viaduct. City workers and a caterpillar tractor ferry traffic south of the Louisiana Training Institute while a new tramway is erected to restore movement and relieve the crisis.

Opening of new semester at Ouachita Parish Junior College set

February 8 marks the start of the second semester with schedule and curriculum changes. Reoffered courses include English psychology political science history and languages while new subjects add English library science health and hygiene mathematics educational psychology trigonometry and geography of Louisiana. Classes run from 8:45 to 3:30 with a noon lunch break and many new students expected, including transfers from other colleges. Marvin Scarborough at 60 earns a private pilot license and owns a plane for pleasure flying becoming one of the country’s older pilots.

Levees Hold Back Flooded Red River Threat

Floodwaters from the Red River remained high with levees holding near Colfax as over 100 workers battled the freeze and rising waters. Many families evacuated their homes across south Colfax and surrounding farmland while Colfax itself stayed mostly dry except for a lower Negro community area. No deaths reported though two men escaped a capsized rowboat during a small tornado.
