President Eisenhower unveils a food-for-peace drive to convert farm surpluses into a tool for free world strength. He calls for lower price supports to curb overstocks and reduce federal outlays while stressing food can aid world peace. The plan parallels prior Congress proposals.
Defense Secretary Neil H. McElroy agreed to review the planned Ft. Polk closing after a meeting with Army and Louisiana officials. Senator Ellender urged keeping the permanent installation pledge, while Senator Long pressed against Army strength cuts and Hebert warned Congress may set a mandatory floor for the Army.
Actress Audrey Hepburn suffered a severe back injury after being thrown from a horse on a movie location in Durango Mexico. Initial reports suggested four broken vertebrae. The accident halted a Hecht Landcaster production scene for the film Unforgiven at the time.
A 16 year old farm boy in Auburn New York admitted to police he killed his father Willis 66 mother Amber 55 sister Elizabeth 14 and brother Willard 19 after nursing a family grievance He waited 45 minutes for Willard to return then shot him and told Horace Young there had been an accident Willard died after a dying declaration named John Jayne as the killer Police said the motive included a punishment from last summer and family feuds with siblings.
Dow Chemical engineers arrived to neutralize caustic soda pooled in ditches near the Missouri Pacific wreck south of Monroe. 80 000 gallons of hydrochloric acid will be used in pits along the right of way to neutralize the soda. Highway 165 will be briefly blocked and the area fenced off during the operation. Sheriff Bailey Grant urged the public to stay away from the site.
Mexico City reports the government seized eight airlines and placed telephone exchange buildings under heavy police guard to curb a six day pilots strike. A general administrator funded by the airlines will assume control to resume air service.
Twin City CHIT-CHAT reports the promotion of Paul Goldman to executive vice president and general manager of Noe Enterprises operator of KNOE AM TV Monroe and WNOE New Orleans. Jimmy Noe announced the appointment and also named Ray Boyd as vice president and director of engineering for all stations.
Chairman Mrs Wesley S Shafto accepts the Ouachita Parish committee chair for 1959 National Library Week set for April 12 to 18. She heads a 75 member civic leaders committee to be named next week and will meet February 6 at 4 p m in the new headquarters library meeting room at 1800 Stubbs Avenue.
Exiled Bulgarian king Simeon II, 21, trains at Valley Forge Military Academy to prepare for a possible return or service to his people. He is named finest upperclass plebe, awarded a medal, and made a sergeant, while remembering his royal lineage and life in exile.

EL PASO Texas a former El Paso physician held without bond for the pistol slaying of attorney Theodore Andress 50 as he and his wife waited for luggage at the airport. Eidinoff admitted firing and blamed Andress for legal troubles including nude photographs. Police described the motive tied to past libel and divorce cases involving Eidinoff and his wives. Andress had won a 110000 libel judgment against the doctor on appeal.
Five 18 year old boys died and two others were injured critically when their car smashed through a pipeline barrier on the ocean beach near Patrick Air Force Base. Patrick Costello and Kenneth Goepper survived and were taken to Orlando hospital. The roof of the sedan was sheared off in the high speed crash about a mile north of the base.
Prince Rainier announced an indefinite suspension of Monaco's constitution amid a clash with republicans and the Communal and National Councils. He will govern directly until further notice, citing failure of councils to report to him as agreed, ending traditional constitutional limits.

The Polaris missile program was downgraded to speed development, reducing its range from 1500 miles to about 800 to 1000 miles, a figure he did not confirm.
Funeral services for W A Myatt 56 of Monroe and Texas Drug Co employee who died of a heart attack in Fort Worth will be held at 10 a m Saturday at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home Monroe with Rev George W Pomeroy officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. Survivors include two Monroe sisters and three brothers from Monroe Kilgore and Baton Rouge. Pallbearers named Herman Marx Pete Godwin William Nadler Frank F Smith A B Myatt Jr and Abe Dryer.
