Washington January 28 Republicans and Democrats agreed landlords erred in using evictions to protest rent controls. Senate leaders said they will review evictions as federal controls expire March 31. Truman rejects landlords plan and federal officials vow court action to stop mass evictions.
Two mink coats valued at 28,000 dollars were stolen last night from Sonja Henie, skating star, after thieves ransacked her hotel apartment. The coats were taken from her suits at the Hotel Pierre on 61st Street and 5th Avenue. Henie, former wife of Daniel Topping, is starring in an ice show at Madison Square Garden.
Four defendants pleaded guilty before Judge Edward L. Gladney Jr in district court Friday as 17 cases were set for trial. A man identified as Willie James received one year in the penitentiary for manslaughter, while J T Mitchell and Willie Roberson drew six month terms for forgery and simple burglary respectively. Lee Roy Mineyfield was fined 25 dollars for defective brakes. John Elmendorf’s charge for resisting search was dismissed. Several others were arraigned with trial dates in March and February for charges including moving chattel mortgaged property, reckless operation, simple burglary, theft of apples valued at 75 dollars, and theft of two cows valued at 164 dollars.

A 24 year old Farmerville woman, Nina Jordan Elmore, drowned when the convertible driven by her husband J F Elmore plunged into Young's Bayou on Milhaven road shortly before 12 30 a m Friday Monroe police said Dr J T French coroner ruled accidental drowning Elmore escaped injuries and was treated for shock at St Francis hospital The automobile was recovered within 30 minutes by an American Legion truck and a wrecker Police said the couple had spent the evening at a DeSiard street night club with friends and had intended to go for barbecue on Texas avenue Two other couples in the party were identified as John Noble 21 Vita Futch Opal Templeton and Tommy Shivers The report said Elmore was traveling at high speed and lost control the car became lodged with only two inches of a tire unsubmerged Three railroad workers near the scene said the vehicles appeared to be racing.
Monroe police investigated two Thursday night burglaries totaling 140 dollars at Silverstein's and Fink's on DeSiard street. Thieves entered through roof access, stole from cash registers and desk drawers, but no merchandise reported missing. No arrests yet.
