In Madrid the president of Spain’s Supreme Court of Military Justice, Lt. Gen. Emilio Villaescusa Quilis, was kidnapped by four armed men as riot police clashed with left-wing protesters across central Madrid. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas at the university campus and Gran Via. Government officials held emergency talks as rivals blamed leftists and ultrarightists for the kidnapping, with GRAPO suspected by some and denied by others.
