President Ford moves to proclaim higher tariffs on imported oil starting February 1 to curb consumption and back energy independence. Congress leaders seek a 90 day delay arguing the plan harms the American people while Treasury and committee members defend the action as correct and urgent.
President Ford will undergo a routine physical examination at Bethesda Naval Hospital on Saturday. The checkup follows his last medical exam on August 22 after taking office, with the prior exam on January 24. In South Bend Indiana a 17 year old girl Loucinda Sherman held over 30 hours by two bandits was found near police headquarters and released unharmed. FBI agents and local police had searched for the gunmen after a federal warrant was issued.
Ford Motor Co reports its January mid-period rebate program helped small car sales rise 31 percent from the prior period though overall mid-January deliveries fell 24.7 percent to 36,612 cars. GM meanwhile shows a 7.3 percent drop as its rebate began January 20 with total period sales at 65,456.
Ford Motor Co told the EPA that meeting the White House goal of a 40 percent gas mileage increase requires relaxing clean air rules further, with a shift toward smaller lighter cars. Ford and GM urged keeping current exhaust emission standards, while outlining a 60 40 split favoring smaller cars and warning of a 20 percent drop in 1977 fuel economy if laws stay unchanged.

Four men were shot to death late Wednesday at a Bluffton country store. Harris C. Mooney 41 of Gainesville died with three other men identified as Robert Charles Berry 17 Colem an Danney J. Lashley 22 Bainbridge and Robert E. Gordon Bainbridge. A man whose car left the road near the station was detained but not charged. Investigators said multiple shooters possible and the store was open at the time.
A sequence of four small earthquakes rattled Brawley and Imperial Valley early today causing window and wall damage but no injuries. Quakes occurred at about 4:30, 4:40, 4:57 and 5:03 a.m. with Caltech seismology lab reporting no immediate intensity details. A wall collapsed at a neighborhood grocery and two store windows shattered, frightening residents including radio staffer Carroll Buckley.
