Louisiana Mississippi and coastal Alabama faced subfreezing temperatures with prompted snow showers and sleet. New Orleans recorded measurable snow for the first time since 1899 as a blizzard moved toward Florida and Arkansas suffered flooding and destruction.
The Rivers Daily reports a flood stage change over the past 24 hours with rising water levels and potential impact downstream. Local authorities monitor the river, warn residents, and issue advisories as the situation develops.
A courthouse outage left offices in darkness when a north side line break halted power. Foreman Pete Simmons and workers Tex Conditt and Louis Demarchi aided by B g Red Cooper on the pole ran cables while Sheriff’s deputy C D Meredith taunted the electricians, who fixed the issue. A thief struck the Monroe First Methodist annex during services, stealing hats from laymen Fred Coon and Sam McReynolds.
In Jasper county near Laurel Mississippi authorities found a young woman's severed legs along a woodland road. Police believe the body was murdered and cut into portions later concealed in separate places. The legs weighed about 150 pounds and stood around five eight, bound in a sugar sack with no blood at the scene. Tracks suggest an automobile or light truck passed after a rain.
Memphis reports record damage as rain swollen Wolf river roared through the waterfront causing destroyed bridges, sunken barges, missing yachts, and losses estimated from 590000 to 1000000 dollars. Steel firms, lumber outfits, and dredges suffered heavy equipment damage while homeless lowlanders moved to cities seeking shelter.
State police reported an abandoned car linked to Alvin Karpis and Harry Campbell found near Monroe Michigan after an Allentown Pennsylvania physician was kidnapped. The running car suggested the pair headed toward Detroit as officers hunted them for Bremer kidnaping and other crimes. Philadelphia police added the Philadelphia physician kidnapping as a possible clue in the Karpis Campbell case.

In Arkansas Norman Thomas supports Ward Rodgers a Vanderbilt graduate and former Boston University student as he appeals to the circuit court. Rodgers was found guilty by a magistrate court for allegedly urging the Southern Tenant Farmers union to overthrow the government.
Federal agents hunted a tall woman in a long dark coat in Houston as a possible suspect linked to Thomas H. Robinson Jr. in the abduction of Louisville socialite Mrs. Alice Stoll. A garage car ride and masquerade rumors complicate the investigation as agents question a young couple.

A February 1932 testimony places Bruno near the Lindbergh residence on two occasions. The witness recounts encountering the defendant in close proximity to the famous home, detailing dates and surrounding circumstances.
Millard Whited, a Sourland logger, testifies he saw Bruno Hauptmann near the Lindbergh estate on February 18 1932 and again between February 25 and 27 as the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case unfolds. The defense seeks to introduce a plaster footprint cast to challenge Hauptmann's role and hopes to present a phonograph record of a ransom conversation.
Mrs. Lottie Pearl Lawn, 48, of 503 Cypress street West Monroe died Monday night around 8 30 after a heart attack. She was stricken at the home of friend Mrs. Bernice Latham 408 Coleman avenue while pouring water into a radiator. Dr W L Bendel assistant coroner investigated and said she probably died instantly. Survived by widower Patrick R Lawn one daughter Mary Grace Lawn one son George M Lawn four brothers Thelmer Meredith of Chicot Ark Alson Meredith of Plain View Tex and others.
Huey Long arrived in Baton Rouge from Washington and met with state leaders while remaining silent on his plans. The return follows the formation of the Square Deal association vowing to end his dictatorship as he greeted friends in the hotel lobby.
The cold wave spread east and south Tuesday causing about fifty fatalities. Floods, fog, sleet, and low temperatures delayed travel and endangered lives as Arctic air moved into Dixie. Arkansas Louisiana Mississippi and Tennessee reported floods while Wisconsin saw Willow River flood damage to a power house. The Wolf River’s high water ripped barges from Memphis docks, harming smaller craft. Minnesota reported temperatures down to 32 below as a cooling trend began in the Northwest and Rockies. Nine trappers have been arraigned and 15 others are still unlocated south of New Orleans to face federal court charges for violating an injunction on trapping. Rival claims from the Violet Trapping company and the St. Bernard syndicate over 90,000 acres are under court consideration. State Senator A Sidney Nunez and Sheriff L A Meraux deny official ties to the St Bernard syndicate. Five of yesterday’s bonds at 2500 dollars were signed by Sheriff Meraux.
A historic blizzard hit Northeast Louisiana starting Monday morning, dumping eight to ten inches of snow in Monroe and stalling city traffic. Railroads operated with minor delays while buses were crippled by ice and snow, and power crews handled frozen pipes as parks and streets remained uncleared. One death, a heart attack to Mrs. Lottie Lawn in West Monroe, was linked to the cold.
In Lancaster on January 22 a columnist notes New York moves fast and the Supreme Court may rule on Mooney rather than the gold clause. He quips Mooney has decades in play while gold is brief and warns against rushing the justices, predicting trouble for Democrats regardless of the ruling.
