Monroe Seeks Rail Links to El Dorado Oil Fields

Monroe Chamber of Commerce reports hope for better through service to El Dorado via Ruston. Chicago Rock Island and Pacific officials urged schedules syncing with U S and P trains 9 and 10 to provide morning eastbound and evening arrivals, benefiting Monroe and eastward communities.

Dr Yoder Transfers to Winn Parish for Tick Eradication Work

Dr J H Yoder of Monroe Ouachita and Lincoln parish cattle tick inspector has been ordered to Winnfield Winn parish to oversee tick eradication. He served two years in Monroe and previously worked in Chicago and Jonesboro. Since his tenure in Monroe Ouachita parish, over half the parish is tick free and the eastern side is clear of quarantine with western side likely to be freed this year.

At the Arkansas and Louisiana Missouri railway annual meeting in Shreveport the board for the coming year was elected adding two directors W T Smith of Bastrop and Reid L Carr of New York City. Recent reports claim about seventy five tramps nightly in El Dorado with some work on streets and others leaving town. Crooks and pickpockets are alleged among the crowds, but the oil boom is cited as the turning point in curbing disorder.

Officers Named for Ouachita Parish White Plague Fight

At the Ouachita Parish Anti Tuberculosis League meeting the year’s officers were elected. President Clyde Sanders, Vice President J Harvey Trousdale, Recording Secretary Julia Wossman, Executive Secretary Emile Kaliski, Field Secretary Armand Reneaud, Treasurer Elmer Richards. Committees include Finance and Education with local clergy and professors. The group outlined plans to combat tuberculosis in the parish.

Monroe Likely to Get Mammoth Pulp Plant

New Orleans January 21. State forester R D Forbes said Louisiana has bright prospects to obtain a large wood pulp paper plant. The facility, estimated at about 1 500 000 dollars, would likely be located in Monroe. Forbes added success could attract further ventures, citing long fibre yellow pine and natural gas resources as key attractions. The company name was not disclosed.

Hardtimes Plantation Sold Near Monroe to Slagle and Johnson

The Home Realty and Development Company of Monroe sold the Hardtimes plantation northeast of Monroe about three miles to Clar ence E. Slagle and A. W. Johnson for 62345 dollars and 50 cents. Cash payment totaled 25345 dollars. The tract lies along Bayou DeSiard and includes all of the Hardtimes property purchased from A. H. Kelley except for 25 acres sold to Riverside Realty and 7.5 acres sold to Mrs. S. C. Morrison.

Saenger Theater Declared Safe by Assistant Fire Marshal

Assistant State Fire Marshal James A. Smith praised the Saenger Theater on DeSiard Street Monroe as fire safe and among the state’s best after a recent inspection. The $200,000 plus theater, built by Saenger Amusement Co of New Orleans, is expected to open in March.
