In Chattanooga on January 20 Rev Israel Noe travels to Memphis to establish a new parish St James with himself as rector The Episcopal diocese of Tennessee approved the petition for the church on Memphis outskirts Noe calls it a victory for freedom and democracy and plans a sizable church to begin work soon
Mexican immigration officials refused admittance to 17 Jewish passengers from Europe aboard the Hamburg American liner Iberi citing incomplete papers.
The Indian Affairs Office announced that medicine men will cooperate with white doctors to treat the sick, a move hailed as significant especially among the Navajos. Dr Leo Schnur and nurse Blanche Chance traveled to Fort Wingate to bring Mrs Rose Smith, ill with diphtheria, to a government hospital despite tribal concerns.
Hollywood gossip notes Betty Grable clarifies her split from Jackie Coogan. She says he suggested separation to “iron out” issues and would return if asked. She denies money concerns forced the breakup and accuses Coogan of selling furniture after the lease expired.
The Campaign for Humanity, aiding persecuted European refugees, named additional committee members Friday. In Florence Arizona on January 20 a prison guard calmed a prisoner screaming to be released, revealing the death row inmate was the prison chaplain Rev Lambreth F Hancock. The warden then unlocked the cell and Hancock walked out after five hours.
President Roosevelt said he favored a $5,000,000 defense improvement bill for Guam but did not commit to fortification. He distinguished between authorization and appropriation and noted the measure would cover harbor deepening, additional barracks for the Marines, and landing facilities for planes. The army also plans to double its force in the Panama zone.
H R Saenger elected chairman of the retail merchants division of the Chamber of Commerce. The group set store closings for July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. Armistice Day hours from 10 to 12. Three Dollar Days planned for March 1 and in July and October. Four Good Will trips approved. The body of 64 year old Paul Shannon, veteran Boston sports writer for the Boston Post, was recovered from Pass a Grille bay near St. Petersburg. Magistrate Fisher labeled it an accidental drowning after Shannon was seen on a seawall at 10 45 pm and did not return by midnight. Survivors include his wife and sister in Boston.

In New York 1200 AFRA members vote unanimously to strike if directed by the federation. Chicago plans a strike vote tonight, with Los Angeles and San Francisco to follow. Wage scales are central, AFRA seeks 15 25 and 35 dollar minimums for 15 30 and 60 minute programs.
Al Capone received a one hour visit from his wife and her un unnamed brother at Terminal Island prison last week.
