In New Orleans a tug boat and barge overturned in the Industrial Canal. Long Beach, Mississippi tug captain James W. Kennedy, 32, was presumed drowned after being found asleep in the cabin. Rescue saved Kennedy's brother Horace E. Kennedy, 17, and pilot Edward Ladnier, 32. Police indicate the Kennedys were sleeping while Ladnier maneuvered the barge loaded with clam shells.

Cushion Sinks As Coast Guard Fails To Retrieve
An attempt to recover a tan leather seat cushion possibly from the schooner Chantress failed as it sank before a helicopter could reach it. The search for five missing aboard the 58 foot vessel continued about 250 miles east of Jacksonville with Coast Guard ships and aircraft involved. The Chantress set sail January 10 from Charleston for the Virgin Islands with owner John L. Pelton his wife two sons and skipper Chris de Grabowski. The vessel reportedly took on water in heavy seas about 180 miles off Jacksonville and sent out a distress calling occupants overboard in two dinghies.
