American and allied forces advanced up to 12 miles in a sudden western Korean front offensive south of Seoul. Osan Kumyangjang and Chon were retaken as air forces blasted Suwon and nearby targets. General Collins stated US forces will stay and fight in Korea and troop reinforcements will begin within two to three months.
President Truman proposed a fiscal year flood control appropriation of 61.0 million for the lower Mississippi and tributaries, about the same as the current year minus 5.4 million. Of the total 61.4 million, 46.5 million would fund construction and the rest maintenance with levee projects among the allocations.

United Nations diplomats paced the corridors at Lake Success awaiting Communist China's response to a new peace offer. Previous appeals were rejected after weeks of delay, though some optimism persisted as Peiping faced a 60 nation committee decision.
In Hattiesburg Mississippi Marvin Denham a 33 year old coffee salesman was accidentally shot and killed by his four year old nephew Richard Dean Denham with a real pistol found under a bed after they had been playing with toy pistols at Denham's Carterville home The coroner's jury ruled accidental death noting the boy pulled the trigger.
Four Keesler Field soldiers died and another was seriously injured in a head on collision on Highway 11 twelve miles north of Laurel Mississippi early Monday. The dead were Pfc Louis J Nash Pfc Francis W Wright Pfc Frank Drapela Jr and John Alvie Worley. Donald E Schimmel was hospitalized with a fractured right thigh. The truck driver Vincent James Danton Sr of New Orleans sustained a minor facial cut but was hospitalized for a full check up. The soldiers were en route to Keesler Field from a weekend leave when the crash occurred.
Horace Wells Jr a New Orleans cabinetmaker saved his wife two children and two relatives after their car plunged through a guard rail into a canal near New Orleans. Wells broke out a window with his fist then reentered the water to pull all from the submerged vehicle. All seven were treated for shock at Baptist Hospital.
Guy H. Holloway 69 a renowned northeast Louisiana attorney and 16 year state legislator died in a Monroe hospital. Funeral services at First Baptist Church Farmerville with burial in Marion Cemetery. Pallbearers listed among family and bar members. He was elected to the lower house in 1916 1920 and 1928 1940. He is survived by his wife and four brothers.
The United States government bans the construction of new stores restaurants offices and other commercial structures until February 15 to conserve materials for mobilization. The National Production Authority will authorize new builds only if they support defense or essential public needs or prevent hardships, with emergency permits limited during the first month. The order covers banks hotels offices garages shops eating houses printing rooms motels and shopping centers and also multiuse buildings require explicit authorization.
Mary Frances Housley a 24 year old stewardess with National Airlines died heroically after saving at least ten passengers from a flaming wreck at International Airport. The four engine plane skidded, crashed into a ditch and burned killing seven others including four women and two babies. Housley held a four month old baby in her arms as she guided others to safety and made repeated trips into the burning cabin before being claimed by the flames.
President Truman directed that all youths volunteering for the armed services file an application with their local draft board for voluntary induction. If unable to reach their board they may apply in the area where they reside. Volunteers are classified promptly and placed in the applicable service class if eligible. The White House released the order without further comment as defense officials push to meet manpower goals with 18 year olds.
Augsburg Germany Jan 15 Ilse Koch titled red witch of Buchenwald was given life imprisonment for murdering concentration camp prisoners. The 44 year old widow of the camp commander was convicted of crimes against Austrian and German prisoners. She did not attend the session and fainted in her cell last night.
Three Vanderbilt University students at Phi Delta Theta raised funds to place a direct call to Joseph Stalin in Moscow to ask whether they should enlist now or wait for the draft. The plan aimed for an 11 a.m. CST completion today with others assisting from Tennessee and Ohio.
Tom A. Simmons of Bogalusa died early Sunday morning in New Orleans. Funeral plans are incomplete and set for Monday. He is survived by his brother Commissioner Johnny Simmons and Mrs. E. B. Todd of Monroe, two other siblings, his wife and two children.

A 17 month old child, Wanda Gay Butler, was seriously injured in a Sunday afternoon crash at the South Second and Linderman streets intersection in West Monroe. The 1940 Ford driven by Troy Butler overturned after colliding with a 1950 Ford Crescent Liner driven by Buster Madison Parker. Butler and his wife were hospitalized with non serious conditions. Parker and two passengers suffered minor injuries. Local police noted 13 accidents from minor violations over the weekend.
The budget to Congress estimates total outlays of 71.594 billion for fiscal 1952 with 55.138 billion in revenue. Major allocations include military services 41.421 billion and international security 7.461 billion. The plan shows funding sources from individual taxes 0.35, corporation taxes 0.50, excise and sales taxes 0.04, and proposed new taxes 0.23 totaling 1.00 per dollar of prior tax income.

Five people injured in a head on collision on U S Highway 80 four and a half miles east of Rayville Louisiana. Jackson Mississippi residents Mrs W C Barfield and Mrs D R Weaver are among the injured along with Mrs Barfield’s husband Col Merrick Bayer and his son Billy Bayer two Jackson women were reported critically injured and were taken to St Francis Sanitarium Monroe Louisiana Col Bayer and Billy Bayer were moved to Barksdale Field after receiving care for injuries.
