The house elections committee rejected a uniform federal ballot for armed forces members and approved a Senate plan sending the issue to the states. Democrats and Republicans split on the federal ballot, while a modified state-based proposal gained support. The debate centers on absentee voting, registration removal, and who prints and transmits ballots.
President Roosevelt faces a chance to heal rifts in the southern Democratic bloc as governors meet in Washington to push for railroad rate equality and resist moves toward a third party. Senate friction and fair employment policy rulings fuel the split, with Bailey and Smith warning of an independent southern faction.
Fierce fighting for the Banja Luka to Prijedor rail line continued as German pressure rose on Yugoslav partisans. Tito's communique said partisans shot down two Nazi bombers near Bugojno and expanded offensives elsewhere.
On January 14 the Japanese failed in several attempts to recapture the Arawe peninsula on New Britain. U S Sixth Army troops hold all main positions in the three mile long peninsula and nearby islands. A colonel returning from Arawe said Japanese forces were within a hundred yards of American lines. Tokyo claimed a recapture, denied by General MacArthur's headquarters, with a detailed status briefing released.
In Chico California Aviation Cadet RD Seale 23 of Taft Calif went blind at the controls of a one man trainer. He landed the craft safely with calm guidance from radio control tower Lt Col C W Thaxton Thaxton directed every move to keep Seale confident and the plane on course Physicians later said the blindness was temporary.
New Orleans reports on the fourth war loan drive outline bond safety features and the E bonds with a 2.0 to 2.9 percent yield. Subscriptions are being distributed to Higgins Industries employees and via credit union offices. An investment committee aims to raise 3 million of the 45 million New Orleans quota. bonds are registered, replaceable if lost, and redeemable at full value after ten years.
Seattle Jan 14 The Boeing Aircraft company said a no paint order will make Fortresses lighter and faster by several miles per hour by eliminating camouflage paint. The order, approved on combat commanders’ recommendation, calls for only black sun glare reducing patches on surfaces except in special cases.
Mack Desilvey a World War I veteran sentenced to die for the death of his 14 year old foster daughter was denied a rehearing by the Alabama Supreme Court. The court had previously upheld a death sentence from Baldwin County. The girl known as Ruby Sims and Ruby Desilvey disappeared after leaving a Bay Minette hotel with Desilvey in April 1942. A skeleton found in Baldwin County woods the following November was linked to the girl. Desilvey claimed she hitchhiked toward Mobile while he repaired a machine.
Allied headquarters report French and American troops pushing through rugged Apennines and toward Cassino with a two mile eastward gain and renewed pressure from the south. Air forces bomb three German airfields near Rome including Guido airport. German counterattacks around Cerraro repulsed, while New Zealand and British units advance near the Adriatic.
Twelve people died and 75 injured when a four car Santa Fe extra crashed into a stopped California bound train at a Lone Star station during a heavy snowstorm. Trainmaster E. E. Baker blamed snow, bad signals, and heavy traffic with Temple HQ reporting the toll. Only one body identified twelve hours after the crash is Marvin Riordan a boy of 11 from Hattiesburg Mississippi. The wreck sent victims to Abilene Coleman and Brownwood while officials investigated.

Dr Ben Slater, ousted from Plaquemines parish sheriff’s office by Gov Jones state troops, faces an intrusion into office suit filed by Jones’ attorneys. The case seeks to bar Slater from any competing sheriff’s office begun “in another part of the parish.” Blaize, Jones’ appointee, remains in the office as the governor’s choice.
Bernice Louisiana mourns as Sergeant Clifton Fomby 24 is reported killed in action during the Tarawa battle. A Bernice High School graduate and Graves Grocery employee, he served in California Iceland and New Zealand, made two sea crossings with the Marine Corps, and wrote home last November 10 1943. He leaves a wife his mother and siblings Oscar Otis Ophelia Feenhy and Mrs Joe Campbell.
London reports indicate the Polish cabinet is drafting a cautious response to the Soviet proposal on the Curzon line as world powers steer talks. British censorship limits speculation while Eden meets Polish leaders and the Times notes a possible delay in Mikolajewski’s U.S. visit amid delicate diplomacy.

One Japanese plane was shot down for certain with one probable, three others damaged. Stilwell headquarters said Tuesday three Japanese bombers attempting to hit a US forward base were shot down with no American losses. Enemies accompanied by fighters. two American planes failed to return. Three Japanese river tankers and other craft destroyed on the Yangtze. two rail bridges and rolling stock damaged.
