The 20 unit graduation rule remains. the new course replaces an elective and starts mid term Tuesday in Ouachita Parish.
The Labor Department reports December unemployment at 7.6 million, 8.1 percent, down 210,000. Total employment rises 220,000 to a record 88.4 million, with gains concentrated among adult men as the economy shows signs of revival amid rising wholesale prices led by food items.
Government figures show overall unemployment at 7.9 percent in December, down from 8.1 percent in November. Men over 20 fell to 6.2 percent, women over 20 to 7.6 percent, teens to 18.9 percent, whites to 7.1 percent, while blacks and other minorities remained at 13.6 percent.
Louisiana Education Superintendent Kelly Nix says teachers deserve higher pay and more selective admission to education programs. He proposes raising grade point average and test requirements, while exploring funding options like severance, sales, and property taxes. Nix cites Louisiana ranking 46th in teacher pay and urges local funding and collaboration among teachers, legislators, labor and business groups. He plans to present programs to the State Board and has reduced temporary certificates by about 75 percent since taking office.
New York stocks fell broadly as the wholesale price index surged 0.9 percent for December. The noon Dow Jones average dropped 574 points to 970.91 after a 10.22-point slide Tuesday, with losers outnumbering gainers by more than three to one on the NYSE.
