A rubber factory in Philmont New York was wiped out by a six hour blaze caused by an oven fire. Two apartment buildings and several shops were damaged and 200 firefighters faced snow ice and winds up to 30 mph. No serious injuries were reported and about 60 workers were displaced. Local officials blamed the X Tyal plant for emotional and economic impact as the town labors to rebuild.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates the Carter like package could add about 610000 jobs in 1976 and 905000 by end of 1978. It projects a $28 billion two year cost with offset gains and notes unemployment could remain high without action. The report cites possible signs of recovery but warns of a slow rebound and rising deficits.
A Paris court freed Mahmoud Daoud suspected of organizing the Munich massacre. He flew to Algiers aboard an Air Algeria jetliner after the ruling, drawing protests from Israel and West Germany who condemned the release as a setback to anti terrorism efforts. The PLO Paris office welcomed the decision as a surprise but relieved action.
Israel recalls its ambassador Mordechai Gazit to Paris to protest the freeing of Palestinian leader Abu Daoud. An official source said the move is to manifest profound discontent and will involve consultations in France.
The noon Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks rose 0.25 to 987.12 after a prior 8.81 gain. Advancers narrowly outnumbered declines, with 164 up and 156 down on the NYSE. Atlantic Richfield led activity, down 1 at 55. Also noting a modest NYSE volume of 9.82 million shares.
The Commerce Department estimates the volume of new facilities purchased by businesses will double from last year this year. The estimate is based on a survey of business readers conducted in November and December, signaling potential renewed expansion of productive facilities to boost the economy.
Former congressman Otto E Passman is negotiating with Gov. Edwards to serve as a Washington based Louisiana state representative. Talks cover duties to improve federal state relations and regain lost agricultural markets, with no salary set yet.
