Cold winds push temperatures to near freezing across Louisiana and Mississippi with northern Mississippi dipping to 30 and New Orleans area forecast 34 to 38. Widespread winds up to 55 miles per hour cause downed trees and damaged windows while the Weather Bureau warns of further freezes, colder for inland areas than coastal sections.
Monroe Dodd supporters announced a campaign headquarters at 304 Wood Street West Monroe with a formal opening planned for Saturday. The West Monroe office has been active since earlier this week and will host the event as supporters urged everyone to attend.

About 25 married men boarded a draft bus at the Ouachita parish draft board on South Grand Street, heading to Shreveport for induction. Twenty seven were scheduled. roughly half of the original test group were rejected for not meeting physical requirements, while those accepted will be sent to a training center within days. The amendment allowing drafting of childless married men made them eligible, changing prior practice that only single men were drafted.
Delivered in Indianapolis on January 10 William Rawlinson started a delivery for Drake's Refrigeration Service. He stopped near his home to visit his wife Betty and five minutes later delivered an eight-pound sow.
In Atlanta a 22 year old woman seeks annulment of her marriage to William S. Sasser after learning her legal spouse is Walter B. Dixon listed as a prisoner of war. Dixon was believed dead in Korea but later found alive. the case cites her prior marriage to Dixon in 1950 and a later marriage to Sasser in 1951. Hearing set for January 28 before Judge E. E. Andrews. Sasser agrees to the court's decision. Dixon's records show he did not report his marriage to the army. next of kin listed is sister Mrs. Lorean G. Storey of Sikeston Missouri.
President Truman urged Congress to expand foreign aid and domestic programs as Republicans and southern Democrats seek budget cuts. Churchill sat in the gallery as Truman called for larger U S armed forces, broader aid to defeat "stomach communism," inflation controls, housing, education, medical care, farm supports, and a $5 monthly social security rise. Senator McFarland praised the push for a bigger air force and continued domestic efforts.
Allied negotiators accuse the Communists of seeking forced repatriation to bolster manpower in Korea. Rear Admiral Libby labels the plan a denial of freedom and a return to slavery, as armistice talks stall over truce supervision and prisoner exchanges at Panmunjom.
A 60 year old man claiming veteran status in passing bad checks says greed of business men sustains counterfeit and forgery schemes. Russell E. Fitz of Dayton is wanted in Miami Jacksonville and Chicago by the FBI. He was arrested in New Orleans and held for investigation into about $12,000 in worthless checks linked to the city.
The Flying Enterprise sank in the Atlantic after a 14 day fight with the sea. Captain Kurt Carlsen and first mate Kenneth Dancy were rescued from the water by the tug Turmoil after abandoning ship. They climbed aboard the rescue craft four minutes before rescue.
A report by Mack Avants shows about 23 schools completed with eight more projects to finish. It lists expenditures at each school including Swayze Elementary 139580.31 dollars, Booker T. Washington 284823.99, A L Smith Sterlington 184041.47, Myles High Sterling ton 262932.50, Swartz Colored 8275.55, Claiborne Elementary 121560.40, Calhoun High 210277.25, Cypress Elementary 4171.43, Crossey Elementary 133356.10, Drew Elementary 12512.70, Fairbanks Elementary and others.
Monroe police investigated five burglaries reported over two days. Bridges Boarding House at 311 North Third lost about $60 from roomers’ billfolds. the Louisiana unemployment office at 1001 South Third reported $10.50 in coins taken. Superior Lumber Company office saw $7 in merchandise stolen. A tire disappeared from W A Smith’s Monroe truck and items valued at $15 were taken from C B Smith’s parked truck on North Second Street.
President Truman said he will keep General Eisenhower on the job as supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe as long as he stays there. He praised the general as a grand man and reaffirmed his full confidence by noting Eisenhower’s high post. Truman noted Eisenhower would resign if nominated for president but would not be relieved except at the general’s request. Eisenhower has not asked to be relieved.
The Cham ber of Commerce merchants division led by Dave Silverstein outlines a 1952 promo calendar. Activities include Easter promotion March 26 to April 14, Mother’s Day May 11, Christmas opening week December 26 to 31, and a weekly prize draw of 100 dollars during Easter shopping days. Parking near downtown shopping center is sought for about 300 cars.
The Hill Lumber and Supply Company Inc at 1610 Louisville received a building permit Thursday to rebuild offices and warehouse at a cost of 30000. Owner Shelby Hill estimates losses at 100000 as paint lumber materials and three trucks were destroyed. Monroe firefighters worked to clear debris. cause of the fire is not yet established.
