In New Orleans Governor Earl K. Long accuses former Governor Richard W. Leche as the high profile rival in the closing phase of Louisiana’s election. The campaign schedule lists speeches and radio addresses across several towns and states the political clash intensifies as Election Day nears.
The Republican National Committee called to meet February 16 to choose date and place for the party’s national convention. Democrats decide February 5. Chicago is favored for the site as both parties eye the Midwest states.
Isabelle Deshler denies any romance with John B. Adams and says she has no intention of marrying him. Adams, a collection agency executive, sought a court order to compel Mrs Deshler to bring her daughter to court to determine if Juliet is being kept from Romeo.
A Roswell engineer W Ballard 46 was awarded $30,000 in a Hagerman New Mexico wreck case against Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe. The Fifth Circuit reversed and remanded for the second time over railroad rule interpretation. The fireman leaped from the engine during the crash scene.
Army to conduct intensive field training and maneuvers in the south from February to June. Brigadier General F M Andrews testified $7.5 million of an $18 million request would fund fourth corps area maneuvers including returning troops home from winter training bases. Exercises planned at Fort Benning Georgia with later concentrations in Louisiana or Texas.
Ouachita parish edges toward debt clearance with a 35000 payment by the police jury and a projected surplus of about 20900 after a final 5000 payment due at the February meeting. An election claims ordinance for the Democratic primary was approved and a six member committee was named to study a short wave radio system for police and sheriff use. An extra 2500 funding was approved for concrete culverts in Brownville and 26 was approved for the Northeast Junior College annual.
Monroe city council approved adding five buses to the municipal system and authorized bid advertisements. Mayor Benoit said the move will improve service, replacing old buses on DeSiard street Riverside and Loop road to better transport schoolchildren, with potential new routes. Commissioner Rodriguez noted current buses are over nine years old, hard to maintain, and parts are scarce. the city currently operates 16 buses with 32 drivers.
The House appropriations committee approved President Roosevelt's emergency defense plan proposing 267,197,908 for army navy coast guard and FBI to cover neutrality patrols training and counter espionage through the fiscal year ending June 30. The panel cut 4,801,615 from the executive total, chiefly trimming army food costs.
Funeral services were held for Travis Colson an 18 year old Swartz resident who died in a Monroe hospital from injuries after a homemade bomb exploded while he and 11 year old Travis Hudson prepared it for New Year celebrations in Swartz. Colson had both legs badly injured and had one leg amputated in a bid to save his life. Hudson escaped with minor injuries.
Seven year old Anthony Pizarro and his five year old sister Judith kept vigil after their mother suffered a heart attack. With their father at sea, the children tended themselves and slept beside the unconscious or deceased parent until a teacher and neighbor found the body, A doctor said death occurred at least 48 hours earlier.
In Baton Rouge Earl K Long uses a 1935 Huey Long law to control New Orleans election arbitration, with czarist power over the Tuesday primary. He appoints six committee members, with four ex officio, amid an injunction fight by rival James A Noe. The panel can settle election disputes, order police actions, and parole or reprieve election officials.
A sample ballot shows voters will select one governor candidate and one lieutenant governor candidate. Names listed include Sam H. Jones Earl K. Long James Morrison Henry Moseley James Noe and others for governor and Joe P Dixson Prieur Leary Joseph Menendez Mare Mouton Harvey Peltier for lieutenant governor.
Conservation Commissioner Ernest S. Clements sought court intervention to bar public access to department records. He urged that records are stored with Frank S. Shattuck and cannot be released, delaying a court order by asking the state supreme court for a stay. He spoke with Governor Earl K. Long in Shreveport asserting the Picayune would never see the records.
Opposition factions in New Orleans conduct nightly classes teaching ballot manipulation as a safeguard against stealing elections. Sam Jones Morrison and Noe back the lectures as others warn workers while John Rogge urges tipsters to report fraud to federal authorities.

Police also review 15 names with alleged fictitious addresses or irregularities amid anti administration efforts. The case follows a visit by Heinz to Orleans Parish registrar R. J. Gregory. Judge Byrnes opened hearings to erase thousands of names from the parish rolls to remove protested entries. Sam Jones supporters seek faster removal. James A Noe backers press for thousands more names. Estimated challenged names total about 16 000.

He says he was the victim of circumstances, credits his 44 years as a political fighter, and recalls a series of unprecedented scandals that followed the June exposure while he sought the office.
Governor Earl Long campaigns for a full term. He is slated to speak at 7:15 p m tonight in Ouachita Parish High School auditorium and at 4 30 p m Saturday at Crosley school in West Monroe with prior stops in Cotton Valley Simsboro Marion Downsville and other towns on his itinerary.
A white man convicted of murder three and a half years ago received parole yesterday and still needs approval from the state pardon board and the governor. Dan Markie was convicted June 25, 1996, in Allen parish and sentenced to life imprisonment. Governor Karl Long later commuted the sentence to 3 to 9 years. Eight others also received paroles in the same release batch.
German high command reported eight British ships sunk in intensified air raids over the North Sea near Helgoland Bight. Britain said only two ships were lost as Royal Air Force patrols protected German bases amid reports of new long range air activity.
Ninth Circuit rules the National Labor Relations Board must protect workers rights to join independent unions or stay unorganized. Sterling Electric Motors of Los Angeles challenged company union status and NLRB enforcement order. Court rejects lower court precedent and criticizes board for excluding company unions from proceedings.
Leon C. Weiss, New Orleans architect, and Dr. Clarence A. Lorio pleaded innocent today in district court to charges tied to the Louisiana State University scandal. Trials were scheduled for January 11 for Caldwell and Lorio, January 22 for Weiss, with motions due by January 18 and pleadings by January 22.
