The Korm Company announced an approved lands advertisement plan aimed at proper, orderly outreach. Company leaders outlined aims to promote parcels with clear notices and compliant wording to attract buyers and investors.
New Orleans reports the Louisiana Company forming a statewide program to lure prosperous farmers and capital to the state. The plan emphasizes publicity, farmer colonies, and cooperative marketing, with Iowa as the first target and a trained sales corps to recruit colonists and attract outside investment.
May or A. A. Forsythe of Monroe Louisiana testified in the Rogers damage suit against the V S P railroad. He said sickness in his area is minimal and the outlook is for quick normalcy. Forsythe, in office 15 years, expects strong business and cites planned public works. He was in town with J M Kaliski a Monroe jeweler.
The text notes that present and future conditions are viewed by the new institution. The end of January will probably see the company formally organized chartered and in active business. Announcement of further plans of the company will be watched with interest.
Special to News-Star reports the Fifth District Levee Board met after a holiday with delays from a wreck. A key resolution ended the temporary General Inspector’s service by February first, while a substitute empowered President E C Rhodes to terminate the inspector when ready. The board also planned a joint inspection with engineers to review the levee system. Petitions on land claims under forfeited state lands were referred to committees.
In Mogadir Morocco on January 10 a battle leaves five hundred Moors and twelve French soldiers dead with sixty wounded. The clash between Moors and French forces was reported as a major engagement of the day.
A major maritime tragedy on the Big Pas steamer leaves eight dead and eleven missing. Rescue operations continue as authorities assess the wreck and determine causes and scope of loss.
Quarantine orders are lifted after pleas from Dr. Dowling and Dr. Gladden are heard in Rayville and Delhi. Officials say health concerns have shifted, allowing resumption of normal activities in both communities.
The Tombigbee river steamer James T Staples exploded near Bladon Springs killing the captain Norman Staples and several Mobile crewmen and injuring many others. Eleven deckhands are missing and presumed dead. Captain Chesley Bartee John Kopf Henry Moulton Yoots Mackee and four Negro crewmen are listed among the dead. Second Engineer Green Vermaille cites mystery over cause with multiple reports and no boiler overpressure.
Dr. Oscar Dowling and Dr. A H Gladden visited Rayville Delhi and Bastrop to urge removal of illegal quarantines against Monroe. Rayville and Delhi rescinded quickly while Bastrop held firm. Inspectors to check sanitary rules in ten days.
Baton Rouge January 10 The Live Stock Sanitary Board banned the turkey buzzard and carrion crow as carriers of contagious diseases and menace to livestock. It urged repeal of laws protecting them and urged the General Assembly to pass legislation for their destruction in Louisiana.
F P Fox of Terre Haute Ind accuses five men including Arthur Slavin manager J H Week Joe Denton and Joe Aberly of manipulating a roulette wheel to swindle him out of about 20000 He says the club demanded proof of funds before paying a 26000 win and a 46000 due bill disappeared as a bet was placed leading to arrests of Slavin Aberly and Wilkes in Little Rock Hot Springs police and club officials pursue the case as Fox swears out warrants for the alleged conspirators.
One new meningitis case is reported on Peach street, Miss Mattieson Waldorf, with a second case in the same house. Riverton imposes a quarantine against Monroe after a mass meeting resolution urged wholesalers not to send drummers and asked US engineers to move equipment away from locks 4 and 3. Dr. J. B. May, parish health officer, reads and approves the resolution. The Louisiana State Society for the Reduction of Fire meets to discuss notice compliance.
George F. Baker testified to enormous profits at the First National Bank of New York City before the House Money Trust Committee. He cited 1868 capitalization of $500,600 and profits surpassing $80,000,000, with dividends totaling 226 percent in four years since 1908, plus special distributions to fund capital increases and company reorganizations.
Salonki January 10. Greek forces opposing Turkish troops near Janina report heavy casualties with more than seven thousand killed and wounded. The Greek Sixth Division leaves today to reinforce the assault on the Turkish fortress at Janina.
Associated Press reports Ankara threatens recall of peace delegates and Romania hints at invading Bulgaria. The Turkish peace delegation refused to abandon Adrianople fortress or Aegean islands, signaling a graver Balkan situation and possible resumption of talks before next week.
Bucharest dispatch reports Romania will mobilize its army if Bulgaria does not grant frontier rectification within forty eight hours. Romania demands the cession of Silistria and a strip of territory north to Kavarna.
Washington officials expect a shift to parcel post for printed matter and other third class mail. Postmaster General Hitchcock allows merchandise parcels to include descriptive printed matter without changing their classification, aiming to boost parcel post use and government revenue.
The industry reports its position near the cash basis is the best and strongest in many years, indicating favorable market conditions for cotton producers.
The Wall Street Journal reports cotton cropping in 1913 will push South growers toward cash sales. With 32 million acres to plow, growers face financing challenges as 4.25 million bales remain to reach markets. Holders have not dominated. finances improve with stronger prices and fertilizer demand.
In Vicksburg Mississippi on January 10 the jury in Annie V Rogers versus the Vicksburg Shreveport and Pacific Railway failed to reach a verdict after several hours of deliberation. The suit sought 106000 dollars claiming the railroad’s special train from Monroe to Delta aided a mob that lynched her husband. The trial was reversed on appeal and a writ of error to the Supreme Court failed.
The British steamer Alcazar arrives in Norfolk leaking and badly listing after a two week storm encounter off the North Carolina coast.
