War ren Wright multimillionaire owner of Calumet Farm dies December 28 leaving his widow Lucille Hiswill sole executor and heir to the Lexington stud farm. If she dies the estate goes to Warren Wright Jr. with immediate bequests to Warren and trust funds. Also bequests to secretary Launetta Heraty, chauffeur, Calumet manager Ben Jones and trainer Jimmy Jones. No total value given.
Reports place Bill Cook, the Missouri ex convict linked to up to eight slayings, in Texas Oregon Kansas New Mexico and California. FBI says border checks offer no explanation for his Mexico return as sightings come from Chula Vista New Mexico Vaughn and nearby areas amid a nationwide manhunt.
Quonset Point R I Jan 9 Dixie Mays 29 year old Clarksdale Mississippi flier piloted one of two jet fighters to a new speed record yesterday. The flight from Jacksonville Florida to the naval air station here covered 989 miles in 1 hour 50 minutes surpassing the old 2 hour 20 minute mark.
Pasquale Donofrio, 38, confessed to the November 25 homicide of Dorothy Martin, 37, whose dismembered body was found in two Long Island Railroad lockers on December 4. Autopsy ruled strangulation. Donofrio, captured while attempting to flee in pajamas, booked on murder charge and to be arraigned.
Washington reports the Veterans Administration will announce the size of the upcoming national service life insurance dividend for World War II veterans. The 1948 50 period dividend will be much smaller than last year's 2.8 billion payout and is expected to begin in March for January anniversary policies.
In Shreveport Louisiana on January 9 an F 84 thunderjet crashed in flames at Barksdale Air Force Base. Royal Air Force exchange pilot Flight Lieut Peter H L Scott escaped uninjured as he attempted to land after a flight from Hamilton Air Force Base California. Capt Fred Gleason of Reno Nevada landed safely in another jet.
Louisiana Rep. Overton Brooks said the army awarded a $350,000 contract for work at the Louisiana Ordnance Works in Minden. The Brown Construction Company of Shreveport received the contract as part of an expansion program to be completed by April 1.
Three African American men confessed to burglarizing Lucian Webb's restaurant on DeSiard road and were sentenced by Judge David I. Garrett to seven, nine and seven years in state penitentiaries. Others faced charges including forgery by check, simple burglary, and theft by check with prison terms ranging up to nine years.
Two senators, Ellender and Thye, say President Truman's state of the union message signals higher price supports to spur production for farm goods. Eugene B Haynes and Company won the bid to replace the Milhaven road bridge for 9856 dollars a double concrete box culvert. The council also awarded a temporary timber bridge at 1390 dollars to keep Milhaven road traffic flowing after last week’s floods washed out the bridge.
