He announced a billion-dollar program of an unconditional war on poverty in America during the State of the Union address.
A 58 year old man Friedrich Motter his wife Helene 50 and sons aged 9 14 and 24 fled their East Berlin home Tuesday night using ropes from an abandoned border apartment near Luckauer Platz in Kreuzberg. They suffered rope burns and the wife broke an ankle as they crossed into West Berlin under a snowstorm. It is the first known escape of this type since 1961 and follows a prior tunnel breakthrough last March. An elderly man attempting a separate escape was captured at the first barbed wire fence.
LONDON AP British officials say they will not stop the sale of 11.2 million dollars worth of British buses and spare parts to Cuba under a five year credit deal with Leyland Motors. The sale aims to restore Cuba's crippled public transport system while the U S criticizes the move as counter to efforts to isolate Castro. Leyland plans to ship about 100 buses per month starting April amid U S embargo tensions.
Washington AP Cannon, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, pledged full cooperation with President Johnson to cut expenses and signaled further reduction in appropriations. NEW ORLEANS AP A financially troubled segregated private school opened for a full day after a Civil District Court attachment was lifted. Junior University of New Orleans Fast resumed classes after bond guaranteeing $9,200 in back pay to 23 teachers. The bond was $11,500 in property posted by James Tharpe, brother in law of president James W. Spencer. About half of the 1,000 pupils attended as deputies padlocked the school earlier. Judge Oliver P. Carriere lifted the attachment until the suit is heard. Administrative assistant A A Clarkson said JUNO’s plan is to continue normal operations through year end. JUNO is the state’s largest private nonsectarian school, funded by the state aid program.
