Mack Avants former Ouachita Parish High School football coach was elected superintendent for four years and Charlie Wall Jr of West Monroe was unanimously chosen as board president. W E Palmer was re elected as vice president while retiring president Inabnet declined re election. The meeting featured heated discussion over controversial issues and a lawsuit over G S Manning.
President Truman announced Dean Acheson will head the State Department effective January 20. Marshal resigns for health reasons after kidney surgery. Lovett also resigns. James E Webb named undersecretary of state. Pace to head the budget bureau.

Baton Rouge January 7 A state hospital board approved a tightened contract form for charity beds in private hospitals limiting monthly charges to 1500 instead of 3000. The board also reduced bills for Winnsboro Sanitarium Leesville Hospital and Hargrove Clinic Oakdale from 3511 to 3120.50 after requesting details.
Washington dispatch reports Republicans split on strategy for future elections with a push to avoid echoing the New Deal. Chairman Hugh D. Scott Jr. says changes are coming as the national committee plans a January Omaha meeting to decide on a broader party program. He polled 180000 workers asking how to correct errors and solicited donations, receiving over 4000 replies.
Southern Democrats predicted President Truman will delay a civil rights showdown in the Senate for two or three months, while Dixie foes keep their powder dry. In his State of the Union message Truman reaffirmed support for civil rights proposals including a ban on poll taxes in federal elections.

Athens Ohio January 7 Police sought a missing 1948 Chevrolet in the hunt for the slayer of Eleanor E Gifford 55 an Episcopal field worker whose body was found at a cottage two miles west of Athens Coroner Dr John H Elias said the beating yielded 11 head wounds and likely death from brain blood clots though murder not yet ruled He noted the weapon may have been a tire iron and that the case bears murder characteristics Rev Sydney J Browne reported her absence from church led to the discovery of the missing car and body with her only known relative Wallace Gifford of Kirkwood Missouri
