US military says Viet Cong launched a new longer battle strategy in South Vietnam. The Binh Gia fight near Saigon is described as the largest and longest so far, with heavier enemy units and higher government losses. One American enlisted man wounded in Phuoc Tuy. total US casualties cited.
Northern California sees flood flow along the Eel River recede after days of heavy rain. Evacuations continued around Fernbridge and Starvation Flats as weather moderated, with 200 airlifted and 300 moved by road. Disaster officials warned more floods possible until Thursday.
Oua Chita Parish Police Jury voted 11 7 to abolish the parish wide fire district and asked Attorney General Jack Gremillion for a ruling. If legal, the district could be abolished at the next meeting January 13. The move followed requests by Olin Mathieson Chemical and Columbian Carbon to be excluded from the district.
Bogalusa Ku Klux Klan threats and cross burnings led a six member speaking invitation committee to cancel Brooks Hays speech. A bomb threat to St Matthews Episcopal Church and a city hall ban forced the move. Hays was to address racial problem solutions in a private meeting. Bogalusa Mayor Jesse H Cutter Jr refused a city venue.
In Montgomery three men James M. White Donald B. Landers and Henry Alexander pleaded guilty to disturbing a religious service after charges of setting off explosives near an occupied building were reduced. Each was fined 200 and sentenced to 10 days in county jail. Reverend Larry H. Williams of First Baptist Church confirmed the reduced charge.
Partly cloudy skies prevail through Thursday in northeast Louisiana as a southerly air flow keeps temperatures mild. Highs reach 68 to 74 with lows 50 to 55, winds 5 to 15 mph, Monroe records 67 for Tuesday and 44 overnight. Cooler temperatures expected toward week’s end.
Deanna Furlow turns 20 at 213 Hamilton Street West Monroe as she ends teen years while student at Northeast Louisiana State College. Her mother Beulah Furlow also has a birthday but hides candles in private.

A fire late this morning destroyed a home at 1512 Tim Street just outside West Monroe. Occupants and neighbors stood by without fire protection as Ouachita Parish sheriff’s patrol assisted with traffic. This is the first serious blaze since protection outside city limits was cancelled. Monroe records show notification 22 months earlier that protection would end January 1, 1965.
