Gov. Thomas E. Dewey warned at Columbia University’s 200th anniversary event that traitors must be punished without harming innocent reputations or stifling inquiry. He cited three threats to liberty: Communism, anti learning despair, and anti liberty zealots, urging discipline while protecting intellectual freedom.
Billy Edmondson became president of the Monroe West Monroe Junior Chamber at a Virginia Hotel Cameo Room meeting. New officers include vice presidents Jake Ussery and S. E. Holloway and seven new board members with others continuing ex officio Hayden as outgoing president and Winston Linam of Shreveport attending.
Arnold M. Kiehn of Santa Barbara describes ward Road prison in Shanghai as deadly during winter, with inmates counting about 15 deaths daily. He says he lost weight, suffered beri beri, endured long handcuffing and chains, and avoided details on fellow foreigners while noting no beatings.

An explosion and fire in downtown Pottstown wrecked the Woolworth Co and Royal Jewelers Co stores. Fire Chief estimated damage at 350000 dollars. The blast after 830 am shook midcity buildings and silenced WPAZ radio briefly due to smoke.
In Korea near the DMZ a Communist horse pulled by Chinese workers crossed into Allied territory after escaping two Marine D M Z policemen. The provost marshal refused the animal and headquarters ordered it returned toward the line and sent back into Communist territory.
Washington reports the Air Force has at least half its medium bomber fleet in jet form as it shifts from WWII B29 and B50 designs. By year end up to 10 wings may deploy B47 jets, with B52 production due next fall and mid air refueling to extend range. President Eisenhower touted growing national air power in context of Korea truce warnings.
Investigation into damage caused by two boys ages six and ten who broke into the Beasley home at 806 Mill Street West Monroe while owners were away in Orange Texas. They cut the porch screen and shattered glass, destroying glassware, a grandmother clock and a valuable dish set. Neighbors reported the disturbance and police took the youths into custody before releasing them to their parents.
Four Lafayette youths filed suit in Shreveport seeking admission to Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette. They allege rejection by registrar James Stewart Bonnet on racial grounds after Sept. 25 and seek a three judge court. They claim no equal educational facilities exist nearby and note state education officials are reviewing the appeal.
A 12 year old Iranian boy, Sassanpour Etezadi, is invited to visit the United States for three months after allegedly foiling a Communist plot against Vice President Richard M. Nixon during his visit to Tehran. The official statement gave no plot details.
James Fitzhenry 18 tried to kill Marlene Bubar 16 with a jack handle after dinner on a North Side street. He planned to crash his father’s car in a garage and asphyxiate them. notes in his pocket reveal obsession and intent. Police say religious differences fueled the motive. the girl escaped and identified him at a hospital.
In Ferrara Italy scores of boys and unemployed men harvest Chinese water fleas from Po River delta swamps. Fleas, once spread by floods and once kept as a curiosity, now sell by the pint and reach the world market as a health food for canaries and tropical fish.
A French military transport crashed on a snow covered Pyrenees peak. A ground rescue team reported little hope any of the 11 aboard survived.
A fire at a farm home two miles north of Kilbourne killed four Ray family members including DeWitt Ray 53 and his wife 48 their daughter Willie Ann 16 and grandchild Steve Palmer 2. The blaze started in a chicken coop with a light globe igniting straw. Neighbors tried to rescue others as the house burned. An investigation was led by local constable Steve Ball and justice Box Haddox. Funeral rites will be handled by Mulhearn Funeral Home in Delhi.
