A deadly ice storm tightens its grip on the New York area with power outages affecting thousands as authorities warn of more severe winds and freezing temperatures later. The storm has caused numerous power line breaks and heavy snow is forecast within a 50 to 150 mile radius.

Auto and truck license plates went on sale at the motor vehicle offices on South Grand street Friday at 8 a m. The first plates were bought by Tom Hicks Transfer Company of West Monroe, per J M Hawkins. Passenger plates cost 23 dollars, truck plates vary by rear axle weight. All vehicles must carry 1948 plates by February 6 or face a penalty. Tags are dark green with white numerals and a white Pelican in the center.
The knife pierced body of eight year old Shelia Ann Tuley was found on a neighbor’s porch in Cleveland. Coroner ruled homicide after seven stab wounds. Police pursue footprints and a tire track. suspect possibly known to the girl.
Paris Jan 2 Premier Robert Schuman unveiled a new anti inflation measure to the French national assembly and warned he would resign if any amendments were adopted. The bill seeks about 120 billion francs to fund reconstruction and curb purchasing power, replacing a prior plan that offered 150 billion francs in taxes or government bonds. Amendments trimmed the revenue by about a third and exempted several citizen classes. The cabinet authorized demanding a vote of confidence as needed.
Otterville, Mo. Aboard two Missouri Pacific trains en route New Year’s Day 1943, 14 people died and about 12 were injured in a rear collision during a heavy snowstorm. Victims include former ambassador Alexander Weddell and his wife, plus Hollywood director Frank M. Ryan.
A five alarm blaze on January 2 in Manhattan’s west side spread across six buildings around Columbus Circle. An 80 year old woman, Mrs. Mayse McLain, leaped to safety from a roof into a firefighter’s net, suffering only leg injuries. Eleven firefighters were hurt. one four story building at 230 West 58th Street was destroyed. Fire began at 7 19 am and was under control about three hours later. The fire also affected 225 West 57th Street and 1780 Broadway. Fire officials cited an explosion and said a rubber company distributing agent occupied part of 230 West 58th Street.
Building inspector Samuel Awl released 1947 construction totals showing expenditures over two million dollars and permits valued at 2,459,503 for the twelve months. The report compares 1946 at 1,471,405 with December alone at 209,190, breaking down to 45 dwelling units and 15 alterations.
Senator Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma doubts the nation is ready for inflation controls urged by President Truman. He cites Oklahoma as preferring higher prices to avoid price control and rationing, contending prices must rise to maintain purchasing power and a sound economy. He introduced a bill to form a Senate committee to study price and wage stabilization levels.
Master Sgt. Robert May of Saltillo Texas told Detective Claude Dodd the German shepherd, kept five months in the garage, dragged his month-old daughter from a crib at Fort Lawton and fatally bit her. The dog, described as not vicious before, had been jealous of the 18 month old boy. May asked for the animal to be destroyed.
The Cotton Valley tornado killed 20 and injured 250 while damaging property estimated at a million dollars. The Methodist and Baptist churches in the business section were wiped out, prompting Rev. J W Buckner and Rev W H Giles to solicit aid from Baptist and Methodist churches to aid reconstruction efforts.
Arab snipers killed a Jewish nurse aboard a Hadassah bus on Mount Scopus and fired on a Jewish funeral procession on the Mount of Olives. Police and Hagana fought Arab, Jewish, and police units in a three sided battle. Across the city, Arabs and Jews clashed, killing and wounding several as violence spread after the UN partition decision.
Greek War Minister George Stratos said guerrilla forces fled into the Grammos mountains after a crushing defeat at Konitsa, where a seven day siege ended with the government garrison relieved. The communique noted Albanian and Yugoslav links and said the capital was the rebels dream, not reality.
Two P 80 jet pilots along tail winds post new speed feats over Japan. Lieut William K Thomas from Seattle flew 350 miles Hiroshima Tokyo in 27 minutes at 717.7 mph. Lieut John B Chickering of New York City covered 175 miles Misawa Sendai in 13 minutes 27 seconds at 780 mph.
In cold clearing weather five southern states mourn 21 deaths and hundreds homeless after tornadoes. Louisiana reports 15 dead, Tennessee 3, Arkansas 2, Mississippi 1, Alabama none. Red Cross sets 100000 emergency fund. Cotton Valley hit hardest with 12 dead and million-dollar damage.
About 3,500 unionized workers at four cable firms stopped work at 12:01 a.m. in New York and other cities, halting roughly two thirds of U S to world transmission. ACA and All-America Cables employees walked out as stalled talks on new contracts persisted with Western Union, Mackay Radio, Commercial Cable, and All-America Cables. Picket lines formed at Western Union cables offices and ITT.
James Sherbondy, 28, the last of a dozen escaped convicts, surrendered at a ranch north of Canon City after a day on the run. He claimed to have been with John Kling er when Klinger was shot. other escapees faced fatal and nonfatal injuries as guards and civilians were also harmed. Sheriff and warden updates reported Sherbondy injured by cold and in custody, with Klinger’s death tied to the earlier breakout.
Senator Sparkman of Alabama says Congress will likely extend rent controls beyond February 29 but has little chance of tightening the law. He expects possible relaxation if any change occurs. Senate banking panel plans hearings on extension after January 6. Sparkman notes Truman’s call for stronger rent control amid inflation concerns.
