Snowbound eastern states felt the impact as crowds welcomed 1971 with fireworks and street rituals. In Europe celebrations ran high while the United States faced fewer revelers and Vietnam war casualties. Pope Paul VI urged world peace as Meir urged real Arab progress.
The US Command announced the withdrawal of the Sun Utility Airplane Co. unit, reducing authorized U.S. troop strength by 170 in Vietnam. Based near Saigon, the Otter aircraft served in the Saigon region and Mekong Delta since 1965 before being sent back to the United States.
The National Weather Service reports Massena New York as the coldest reading yet. Thursday’s high reached 8 degrees at Vero Beach Miami International Airport and West Palm Beach Florida.

The Norton family includes four older children. father works as an oil field worker for Pan American Petroleum.
