The Associated Press reports a grim global War panorama as Hitler vows victory and Churchill pledges continued resistance. Mussolini struggles, France faces hardship, while the United States mobilizes for defense under FDR and the call to make America the arsenal of democracy.
In Indiana Pa five miners were rescued after 18 hours entombed when a drift mine cave‑in trapped 18 workers. Thirteen others escaped earlier as tons of slate collapsed three miles below the mouth. No casualties were reported and rescued men were brought out at night. one trapped worker recalled intense heat and fear.
Government statisticians and labor leaders foresee about four million new defense related jobs in 1941, with ships aircraft arms and munitions driving employment. payroll growth could spark up to two million more non defense roles in mercantile and related sectors. Philip Murray and William Green forecast a strong surge in labor activity and lower unemployment.
London greeted 1941 with grim defiance as blacked out streets echoed cries of To hell with Hitler. Miss Dorothy Pearl Cloyd daughter of Mr and Mrs J H Cloyd of West Monroe was found dead in a New York hotel on New Year's morning. Brother O L Cloyd traveled to New York to arrange the body and funeral plans call for services by Dr Carlos Smith in West Monroe Sunday. She had worked three years as a Berkshire Wholesale model in New York and was educated in local schools. She leaves her parents four brothers O L Lafayette Jack and C B and a sister Mrs J Wallace of West Monroe.
President Roosevelt worked through a holiday to craft his annual message to Congress. He is expected to seek broad authority to lend war supplies to Britain and perhaps terms for repayment, with further details on defense, aid to Britain, and production speedups. Congress debates convoy policy and production control as the administration presses for speed.
SHREVEPORT Jan 1-4 T K Schimpf 46 of Dixie Gardens was killed instantly about 130 this morning when struck by an automobile near Barksdale Field just outside the city limits of Bossier City. Coroner J B Hall says the car was driven by Julius Kahn of Chicago en route from New Orleans to Shreveport to visit relatives. Schimpf is survived by a widow and a 4 year old child. This was the area’s only fatal accident during the New Year celebration.
An Associated Press tally at 11 a.m. EST shows over 50 deaths from violence during New Year celebrations in the United States. Traffic crashes caused at least 42 deaths, fires, shootings, stabbings and related causes 15. New York led with nine traffic fatalities. other states reported multiple deaths. Chicago welcomed 1941 with its first baby, a boy born at midnight via Caesarean section to Mrs. John Stork.
Australian naval board reports German raiders attacked Pacific shipping over months, rescuing 300 survivors from 10 sunken ships totalling 62,772 tons. Victims include Rangitane 16,712 tons and Tarakina, with British, Norwegian, and French nationals among the cargo and passengers.
Winthrop Rockefeller 28, heir to John D. Rockefeller fortune, intends to join the army at 21 dollars a month. The Yale graduate will sign up as a private for one year in voluntary selective service at his draft board, after a prior stint at Plattsburgh CTC.

Captain J. Wallace Bostick a veteran financial writer and former editor in chief of the Times-Picayune died at his New Orleans home. He retired Oct 17 1930 after a long career that included leading the Louisiana Naval Militia and commanding state ships during the Spanish American War. He later reported the cotton market for the Associated Press.
A Santa Fe freight train derailed near Del Mar California and plunged 150 feet off a cliff. Three crew members Glen A. Dunham C W Walden and H A Williams were killed. Officials blamed a weakened fill possibly from recent rains. Two other workers were bruised and passengers were bused south as lines were halted.
Reports from Cairo indicate negotiations have ended while Greeks claim new campaign successes against Italy.
