The first parcels post service began with the inaugural mail delivery to Governor Wilson as the system started operations. The ceremony marked the launch of a new era for parcel delivery and postal efficiency nationwide.
Americans begin using Parcels Post on New Year’s Day with items from pitchforks to prunes and paving stones, while first packages reach Gov Wilson and President-elect receives apples. Post officials announce $300000 in funding and expanded city delivery as inauguration plans unfold.
The first article mailed at midnight by parcel post was a five foot long six pound pitchfork sent by W. A. Kreh of Birmingham to E. W. Kreh of Good Pine Louisiana in Zone 4 Unit 2585. Postage totaled 38 cents.

Memphis Tennessee January 1 suit to enjoin the Mississippi River Commission and the levee boards of states along the river from building levees was filed in the local Federal Court Tuesday. John F. Cubbins representing the Riparian Land Owners Association which controls 50 000 acres along the river in Tennessee Arkansas and Mississippi brings the action contending the move is unconstitutional as the willful destruction of private property without due process and that the boards are unable to pay damages from floods.
