Oklahoma City FAA chief Najeeb Halaby, guarded by five detectives after an apparent threat, defended the sonic boom test amid public backlash. City officials debated halting the test as residents split between fury and curiosity while Halaby travelled to Los Angeles after the briefing.
In New York, Robert A. Siegel auction house set a US stamp history mark as No. 106 a block of four 24-cent air mail stamps sold for $67,500 after a two minute bidding duel between New Orleans dealer Roger Weill and a Nyack agent Ezra Cole opened the bidding at $42,500. The saleeer noted a prior price of $21,500 from 1935 1936.
CORE leads shop-ins at Lucky Stores in San Francisco Berkeley and Palo Alto to protest alleged reverse discrimination and hiring practices. The tactic causes store losses, tense relations among Negro leaders, angry shoppers, and warnings from the Baptist Ministers Union to sever ties if demonstrations continue.
Tim Mayer 26 of Dalton Pennsylvania, nephew of Governor Scranton, was killed in an auto racing crash during a Longford Circuit practice. He died in an ambulance en route to Launceston General Hospital after coming to Tasmania for a two day road racing program.

New tax cuts will boost Ouachita Parish earnings and spending as households save on 1964 taxes. The plan lowers rates, with high earners paying 77 percent of tax now from 91 percent previously, and a $400 minimum standard deduction for many families.

New Orleans businessman Whittaker F. Riggs III and his female companion Miss Ann Hess died when their single engine four place Comanche crashed two miles southeast of Lakefront airport after takeoff at 11:54 p.m. The coroner identified the pair and noted Riggs had flying hours and training for multi engine certification. The woman, found thrown clear, wore slacks and a jacket and had no papers. Coast Guard helicopters later sighted the wreckage and ground teams reached the scene hours afterward.
Passengers and crew aboard a Delta DC8 and a Delta C46 freighter reported moderate to severe turbulence in the crash area near Lake Pontchartrain before and after Eastern Air Lines Flight 304, which crashed killing 58. Flight recorders were being studied by the Civil Aeronautics Board.
