In Bonn AP reports Western alliance pacts allowing about 500000 West German soldiers to join the 14 nation NATO defense force moved to the Bundestag's upper house for final ratification within three weeks. The measure passed the lower house after a four day debate amid broad support.
In Los Angeles a jealous suitor identified as Charles Carr Jr shot and killed a landlord, wounded the landlord’s wife, and abducted three people before police killed him. Carr forced two captives to drive him to Miss Shaw’s home where she escaped after a brief confrontation. Police pursued the stolen car and recovered the suspects later that night.
Dr W Carroll Summer says Ouachita parish aims to vaccinate 4620 first and second grade pupils from public private and parochial schools if polio vaccine is licensed. The National Foundation supplied the vaccine used for 440000 children last spring as evaluation continues at the University of Michigan. Plans must be ready in April when license is granted to start vaccination operations.
Coast Guard renews search for Tulane University law student George Cushman who lashed to a mast and swam for help as a sailboat capsized in Lake Pontchartrain. Three companions stranded on the hull were rescued by a passing tug. Cushman remained missing after 20 hours.

Shreveport Louisiana reports former Shreveport mayor Clyde E Fant weighs a 1956 governor bid. Fant who headed the Louisiana Municipal Association hints at running or not and may receive backing from Governor Robert F Kennon. Kennon declines to comment beyond cooperation with his supporter group. Fant remains in the insurance business with two mayoral terms prior to his state bid consideration.
Burma announces willingness for an unofficial U S mission to discuss the case of imprisoned American airmen and rising U S Peiping tensions. Premier Nu says Chou En Lai approved the conference idea while Dag Hammarskjold continues private diplomacy for the prisoners despite prior rejections.
The Navy expects guided missile firing cruisers ready for antiaircraft duty by July next year, upgrading the heavy cruisers Boston and Canberra. Britain plans two ships but warns delays. In 1946 US hulls of Kentucky and Hawaii were begun as guided missile ships, but work paused as missiles lagged.
