Supreme Court of Louisiana affirms a $50 fine against Timothy Newell, owner of the Crystal Theatre in West Monroe, for Sunday showings. The ruling ends a long dispute over Sabbath film exhibitions and requires payment of the fine and costs.
The News-Star reports Mrs. Florence Austin Chase leading a five day homemakers course in the city school auditorium starting at two this afternoon. Demonstrations aim to improve the business of running a home with free admission for Monroe women and nearby residents.
Fairgrave Omlie of Memphis Tennessee the first woman to apply for a federal license as an airplane operator. She is Vernon C. Omlie’s sister and says she has flown 200 miles in her application.
Britain protests Bolshevik propaganda and the Soviet reply accuses Winston Churchill of labeling Russian authorities as a cosmopolitan conspiracy linked to criminals from Europe and America.
George Colburn a Miami realty dealer confessed responsibility for the death of Milthorne Woolsey a 76 year old former New York financier who was run down by an automobile January 19 Woolsey corpse found January 20 in a vacant lot Colburn said the killing was accidental a newspaper blinded his vision and he drove off fearing an attempted holdup He said he did not notify the police immediately and three men were arrested on suspicion of blackmail after the incident.
Francis Webb and Max Amos Wilson, both African American, were electrocuted at the Western Penitentiary in Rockview for the September killing of Walter Harden in Chester. Harden was trying to protect two female companions during the robbery.
Five men drilled the Sutton and Gibson jewelry store safe in downtown Miami blowing it open and taking cash and jewels valued between 75 000 and 125 000. Dr I Lowe and Dr A L Lustgarten were tied up and kept under guard during the break in. A negro porter was bound as the robbers fled freeing Lowe ten minutes later to summon police.
Conrad Brown 61 fatally wounds himself with a revolver in New Orleans after ordering his son to leave. The boy, 12, heard the shot and saw his father shoot himself a second time as he begged him not to hurt himself again. Brown dies on the way to Orleans Hospital.
Shantung reinforcements bolster Sun Chuan-Fang forces at Sungkiang as defense works rise to guard Shanghai from nationalist advances. Chang-Tsung Chang returns with northern troops while Li Pao-Chang seals the Whangpoo river entrance. A thousand British marines arrive aboard the Minnesota amid a labor strike protest that fails.
Wrecking crews rebuild a bridge and about 100 yards of track ten miles north of Baton Rouge after 11 tank cars derailed and burned. S. D. McKie of Vicksburg, a brake man, was burned in an explosion but treated and not in serious condition. Derailment blamed on a defective rail that passed inspections.
A Rayville sheriff report notes two Delhi schoolgirls Hazel Green and Vada Clark disappeared after a Wednesday auto ride in Delhi. A Ford and a green Chrysler were seen with three men and two girls, with a lead to Webb Goodlett in West Monroe. two Delhi men were briefly detained then released.
A sorrowing nation paid tribute to American army aviators Capt Clinton F Woolsey and Lieut John E Benton killed in the New York to Detroit crash. Bodies lay in state at the Military Club as services and military honors were held before their return to the United States aboard the steamship Vauban.
In Alexandria Louisiana on February 28 a 42 year old Clark Morse Lumber employee Frank Q O Kelly of Derry backed his car to avoid an oncoming vehicle at a narrow bridge and plunged over a high embankment. He was killed instantly and his wife suffered slight injuries.
West Monroe observers joined about 600 church members in a rain delayed ground breaking at North Third and Pine for a $60,000 church building. Pastor M E Weaver presided with Mayor Bell delivering remarks and key church leaders and Boy Scouts taking part in the ceremony.
In St. Louis on February 28 Robert Johnson a 29 year old black man was hanged at the Louisville jail yard in Clayton for the assault of a white married woman. Johnson showed little emotion as he approached the gallows.
Britain's note to Washington expresses sympathy with the invitation to discuss extending Washington naval arms limits. It says Britain will consider carrying the Washington principles further, including ratios by ship class, while noting implications for Geneva preparatory talks and the need for careful adjustment.
The Senate elections sub-committee upheld Senator Gould of Maine in his right to hold a Senate seat. The panel recommended dropping charges over a $190,000 payment to a Canadian official linked to a railway contract. Gould denied fraud. the committee noted concerns over pre election conduct but avoided ruling on Senate authority.
River stage readings show declines in several locations with minor changes. Memphis down 0.3 feet to 48.9 feet, Vicksburg down 0.2 to 48.9, New Orleans steady at 18.5, and Alexandria falling 0.4 to 20.5 feet. Osceola/Camden report unchanged at 10.0 feet.
The Supreme Court ruled today that Edward L. Doheny must surrender the Doheny naval oil leases and contracts from the Fall era as tainted by fraud. The court, in a unanimous decision by Justice Butler, held the leases illegal under Fall policy and denied Doheny any compensation.
The Supreme Court announced it would dispose of the Doheny oil cancellation case and similarly structured proceedings involving Harry F. Sinclair, aiming to reduce the docket. The decision was disclosed from Washington as the court prepared further rulings in related matters..
Frederick Wilbert aged 75, former Iberville Parish state senator, died at his Plaquemine home after a long illness. He led A Wilbert's Sons, headed Wilbert Myrtle Grove Planting and Manufacturing, and chaired Louisiana Red Cypress association. Survived by four brothers, five sons, two daughters.
In Columbia on February 28 four Greenville golfers were arrested en route to a match as Governor Richards tightens enforcement of the state's Sunday closing law. They were released on recognizance and warned they could be jailed if they play again. Across major cities, closures hit gasoline stations, garages, soda shops and restaurants while newsboys were chased from Aiken streets.
