A reflective column discusses President Coolidge probes into gasoline pricing, FTC investigations, and Teapot Dome echoes. It notes Mississippi’s proposed four cent gas tax, a paratrooper field stunt, mob justice in Texas, and calls for lawful order as winter yields to spring and fate persists.
The Shipping Board through the Fleet Corporation called for bids on the entire fleet of 133 vessels. Contracts may be revised and offers must be received by March 14 with no award before that date.
A committee of gas operators and conservation officials was appointed by H. Bell to investigate severe gas depletion in the Swartz field. The 15 member group will gather data on wells and pressures, with a next meeting to decide if actions will be regulatory or operator-led.
Baton Rouge February 26. State University head T. P. Boyd, president of Louisiana State University, will retire at end of the current session. His successor will not be named during the Parker administration.

Supervisor Bell expressed regret at not guiding all issues alone and assured Monroe residents the city would have gas for domestic use for fifty years. He described extracting gas from abandoned holes and noted two companies’ experiments to boost carbon production from about one to eight or ten pounds per thousand feet. He warned of elusive gas field problems and leaks wasting up to half of metered gas, and a polluting legislation resolution was approved.
The senate immigration committee adopted the 1910 census as the basis for new immigration quotas and voted to reduce the quota from 3 percent to 2 percent.
Washington February 28. Senate oil committee plans court action soon and will call A Mitchell Palmer, former Wilson era attorney general, as telegrams reveal McLean Post connections. The panel, citing disclosures about Underwood and Zevely, reviewed messages between John Major and McLean and withheld identifications for public clarity.
Senator McKellar proposes an inquiry by the oil committee into income tax returns of E. L. Doheny and Harry F. Sinclair and their oil firms. The resolution calls for the President to furnish these returns and those of E. L. Doheny Jr for examination for possible payments to former Secretary Fall.
Reservations must be made now for a special train from Moree to Shreveport on March 6 to hear Billy Sunday. A 125 round trip fare must be guaranteed, checks for 7.02 dollars to Rev. Frank Tripp in Monroe should be mailed at once. The train departs 3 30 p m from V S P Station and returns after midnight. Sunday will reserve a section in the Shreveport tabernacle for locals. if not enough reservations the checks will be returned.
Oklahoma City February 28 news says J C Walton former governor is likely to enter the Democratic nomination race for the United States Senate though no formal announcement has been made observers report.
Lufkin Texas mob attempts to lynch Booker T. McMillan alias Williams awaiting trial for the murder of Andy Sulser a 54 year old commissary near a saw mill. National Guard troops from Nacogdoches guard the Angelina County jail after four were injured in the fracas. Judge E Mantooth and others avert a dynamite attack and set a trial for Saturday. In Washington the immigration committee moves toward a 3 percent quota with a shift to the 1890 census base.
Senator Willis of Ohio rejects telegrams tied to the oil inquiry and says he does not know any John or Johns named in copies sent to Edward M. McLean of Paha Beach Florida. He states the references to Willis are unclear and he has no idea what they refer to.
Governor Alfred Smith of New York filed his Democratic presidential nomination petition today with the secretary of state, presented by Raymond T. Keefe of Chicago. The petition contains 5,000 names.
New York officials processed over 2100 arrivals at Ellis Island on February 28, the largest daily influx since January 1. Most were Italian wives and children seeking admission under the Markarian decision, with about 85 percent admitted.
Washington February 28 Republicans and insurgent leaders reached a virtual agreement on the Longworth compromise to replace the Democratic income rates in the revenue bill. If a lower normal rate is accepted, leaders say they will vote to eliminate the Democratic income tax schedule. The House resumed debate and voted to cut half the five percent tax on automobile tires and accessories, with exemptions for trucks and wagons under a $1,000 chassis. higher chassis costs face 3 percent tax.
Forty members of the U S House announce they will introduce next week bills to legalize manufacture and sale of beverages with 2.75 percent alcohol by volume. The move aims to modify the Volstead act and is endorsed in a letter to fellow representatives signed by Britten Browne Berger Brumm Geller Clanery Connery Connolly OBrien OConnor O Sullivan Perlman Rangley Rosenbloom Sabath Schafer Sherwood Stephens Tague Tydings Voigt Wolff and others.
