Commissioner H W McSherry announced plans to purchase five 31 passenger buses from General Motors at 520,000 total to replace aging units. He aims to standardize makes to cut repair costs as the department struggles with losses and a partially worn fleet.
Western diplomats forecast the Soviet Union would sign a separate peace with East Germany next month, granting East Germany more authority over Western supply routes to West Berlin. The move would bolster East German legitimacy, affect border status, and influence tie ins with West Germany. Walter Ulbricht indicated East Germany would seek half the seats in the confederation’s controlling congress despite population differences.
At the intersection of U S 150 and Illinois 17 in Galesburg five people died and three were injured when a car collided with a semi truck loaded with steel. Victims include Ray Johnson Jr and his wife and daughters Peggy and Janet, plus Boyd Coulter. Kathleen Coulter and Elaine Johnson were hospitalized. Truck driver Henry M Cole survived with noncritical injuries. No immediate cause given.

British authorities in Southern Rhodesia rush native nationalist leaders into confinement behind barbed wire amid a state of emergency and a ban on the African National party. A detention camp at Bulawayo fills as leaders are hunted. Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia report quiet.

He was fined 570 dollars or an additional 1 dollar a day. The attack followed a basketball game at Memorial Stadium.
