Westbrook Pegler vents on corruption in college athletics and public trust. He condemns athletes who conspired with gamblers, warning of moral decline and media sensationalism, while urging accountability and reform in sports and civic institutions.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that states cannot bar strikes in essential public utilities even during emergencies. The Wisconsin law banning utility strikes was struck down as Congress regulates interstate commerce.
President Truman urged Congress to double second class mail rates and raise postal cards to two cents to trim the postal deficit. He argues newspapers and magazines would be subsidized by the general public, and calls for higher minimums on circulars and advertising matter.
In Prague on February 27 former foreign minister Vlado Clementis and four other senior Communist leaders were jailed in a reported plot to assassinate Czechoslovakia’s Communist president and push the country westward. The Central Committee announced a mass party purge since September, removing about 170,000 members in the biggest cleansing since the Communists took power. The arrests followed a report that the party would prove only those loyal to the Soviet Union and Stalin remain. Five lesser conspirators are also reportedly imprisoned.
Oscar Collazo’s attorneys said they will conceal their defense strategy to save the Puerto Rican from the electric chair. Prosecutors planned to outline their case as jurors were selected, with ten women and two men seated for the trial.
Senate investigators heard testimony that an $8,540 mink coat delivered to Mrs. Merv Young last fall was charged to a Washington lawyer tied to RFC loan matters. Furrier Louis O. Wheeler said the coat was first charged to Young on Sept. 15, 1950, then switched to Joseph J. Rosenbaum, a man said to influence RFC grants.
Pfe Robert L Smith of Middleburg Pa, a double amputee from Korea, met James Wilson a World War Two quadruple amputee flown from Colorado to offer encouragement. Smith also held his first news conference since December while learning of his brother Howard Smith’s return from Korea with an army discharge.
Barnett Brezner was awarded the Sanitary pump station contract after submitting an alternate bid of 18,430 in Mayor John F E Coons's office. The low base bid was 18,390 with other bids from W G Haynes and Associated Contractors. The station will be in the old Country Club Addition to serve sewerage district one.
San Pedro California February 27 Eighteen people were selected as volunteer guinea pigs for a muscular dystrophy research project at Leo N Levi Memorial Hospital in Hot Springs Arkansas. The volunteers were chosen from 300 applicants nationwide.
Washington reports President Truman showed no concern over the ratification of the constitutional amendment limiting a president to two elected terms. He said I have no comment and it does not affect me. Former President Hoover also declined comment as the amendment nears 1952 campaign use. The 22nd amendment largely becomes law, restricting any person to a maximum of ten years in the White House.
Five year old Randy Wayne Gresham died at a local hospital shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday after being struck by a panel truck driven by Jack Hollingsworth 33 of 2618 North Tenth Street West Monroe while crossing South Second Street at 6 05 p m Monday. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Buck Gresham of 1213 South Second Street. The body was taken to Mulhearn Funeral Home with funeral arrangements incomplete at noon.
New Orleans February 27 A 38 year old pipefitter and second survivor from a Mississippi River bridge leap was in serious condition after being pulled from the water by a towboat. T. E. Kraemer of Algiers said it was nobody's business why he jumped as police learned of a prior bridge search halted two hours earlier following tips of a woman.
An American regiment pierced the main Korean Red defenses on the east central front as doughboys repelled five fierce counterattacks. Col. William R. Quinn of the U S seventh division said the Reds were being driven into rugged mountain country and would be pursued into caves and valleys.
President Truman sought a compromise with the Federal Reserve over anti inflation policy. He invited Fed Chairman McCabe and officials to discuss a memorandum proposing to restore 1933 emergency banking powers while demanding continued open market support to keep government securities at par or above.
New Orleans February 27 Lieut Governor William Dodd announced he will run for governor in 1952 regardless of Gov Earl K Long's support. The pledge follows talks with political leaders amid Long's hint he may back John Doles of Plain Dealing if Doles runs. Dodd said he would welcome any support but not rely on the governor. Doles meanwhile said it was too early to decide on a run.
Washington reports that Eric Johnston will approve the 10 per cent catch up wage formula while urging the wage board to reconvene to discuss modifications. The move could persuade the three labor members to return after quitting in protest against the pattern, which would total a 19 per cent rise between Jan 15, 1950 and July 1.
Washington February 27 The senate moves into debate on a draft bill to induct 18 year olds for 26 months with the armed forces linked to a long term universal military training program UMTS. Secretary Marshall backs lowering the draft age to 18 and extending service. Senator Lyndon Johnson expected to open the debate after noon.
A 1940 Lincoln sedan was severely damaged after being struck by an Illinois Central train at a North Grand Street crossing in Monroe. Driver James Thornell, 303 Filhiol, attempted to beat the train and swerved, clipping a 1940 Chevrolet driven by Roe Duchesne before the locomotive struck the Lincoln. Engineer J. D. Parker, 500 Pine, operated the engine.
AP analysis notes a sharp purge within Communist parties across the Soviet bloc. Czechoslovakia reports 179 000 removed from rolls amid arrests of Vlado Clementis while Hungary Romania Bulgaria Poland and Albania announce large roll reductions. The ongoing purge reduces parties to a hard core.
At Angola prison farm in Louisiana on February 27 ten inmates cut the tendons of their right heels as part of a protest against alleged brutality. The act followed 31 prisoners who had cut left heel tendons in the prior 12 days, prompting the warden to isolate them in a new hospital.
