Mississippi legislature scales revenue plan amid tax debates

The Mississippi House proposed a budget of 19,965,020 with substantial cuts, while backing a 20 percent tobacco tax and higher insurance taxes. Senate votes moved toward a one percent sales and income tax, with a sales tax in play. A rural school rally drew about 5,000 to urge adequate rural education funding.

Ira Castles Named State Y M C A Secretary at New Orleans

Tra Castles of 618 Calypso Street, a sophomore at the College of Commerce, was named secretary of the state student Y M C A. He will also serve as editor for The State Student Y News published at LSU. LSU attendees included Sam Charlton, Pete Miller, Clifford Hull, and Castles.

Girls Escape Injury As Car Skids Into Water

Three women from Jonesville Ruth Ford Lucille Wright and A Book narrowly escaped drowning when their car skidded off the road near Harrisonburg into backwater from the Ouachita River. They swam to shore and the vehicle was recovered. No injuries were reported. Also notes that garter snakes hatch in broods of 30 to 70 and reach 24 to 39 inches.

Rotary Club Luncheon Highlights National Day Theme

Seven former press roes attended a weekly luncheon observing the national organization’s Day. R Downes spoke on unemployment and charity while Albert Horuff addressed Rotary efficiency. J M Cobb Aubrey Haas and others spoke on fellowship and general business conditions. Elmer Slagle presided as Jack Warren resigned as president for the occasion. Music by Kate Allison M C Delaret and Leon Hammonds complemented the event.

Reitzell Promoted to First Lieutenant in Army Reserve

Frank V. Reitzell of Monroe, president of the area reserve officers corps, has been commissioned a first lieutenant in the U S Army reserve officers corps. Captain John S. Moore plans a March visit to assess elevating four members. Captain J C Johnston remains out due to injury at Fort McPherson hospital.

Hobbs Post to Extend Signature Drive Tonight

Veterans of Foreign Wars Rodney J. Hobbs post will prolong its signature campaign for another week, per M. E. Dupont. Headquarters are on the first floor of the Bernhardt Building near the east entrance as effort targets 10 000 signatures with help urged from the local post to aid Ruston and Winnsboro in establishing new posts.

Farmer waits for thaw to repay bank loan

A farmer told a bank he could repay a loan once the ground softens after frost, allowing him to dig up his money jar. The remark linked seasonal thaw to his repayment plan and money in circulation.

Levees Patrol La. District Riders Patrolling Flood Lines

In Tallulah Louisiana February 26 special report riders are employed by the Fifth District Louisiana Levee Board to patrol levees across East Carroll Madison Tensas and Concordia parishes. Board members expect no danger from high water but riders will mainly inspect the levee system.
