President Eisenhower said Khrushchev’s intransigent tone worsens prospects for Berlin talks and dismissed a summit. He warned against a Big Four foreign ministers’ conference and stressed NATO unity and that any war would be provoked by others, not the United States.
Local school leaders oppose federal aid to education as advocated by Dr. Ruth Stout. Ouachita and Monroe officials say federal involvement would threaten autonomy and control. City and parish boards voice broad Southwide consensus against this aid approach.
President Eisenhower cautioned at a news conference that heavy taxation of profits could threaten federal financing. He argued government relies on private enterprise profits and noted other highlights including views on East-West talks, a non aggression pact with Russia, and defense spending debates. He also reported cancer stricken Secretary of State Dulles responding well to radiation therapy.
A 47 year old aviation mechanic from New Orleans died after a collision near Bay St. Louis involving two cars and a butane gas truck. John O. Gunter of 4401 Perlitas St. Apt 4 was pronounced dead at Gulfport hospital. Two others, Francis Lee Coster 38 of Bay St. Louis and Albert J. Campbell 30 of Convent La., were injured.
President Eisenhower at a news conference defended his defense program calling some critics demagogic. He said he knows defense needs better than individual service chiefs and noted differing views among services are natural as each argues its importance to national security. He asserted final defense decisions rest with him.
A meeting of all Shrine Club members in northeast Louisiana is planned for Thursday at 7 15 p m at Highland Park Country Club in West Monroe. Joe F Smith publicity chairman said a maximum turnout was expected.

Teamsters predict victory in Puerto Rico as board vows heavy spending. AFL-CIO reports 59 percent of NLBR elections since 1955 merger and over a million new members. Livingstone notes rising requests for aid from affiliates across several states. Meany, age 65, says no retirement plans and secures a third two year term.
Senate investigators accuse a Chicago coin machine group of an organized shakedown that allegedly brought in over 100000 dollars a year. Chief Counsel Kennedy labeled the association as pressuring operators through threats, with violence used to destroy nonconforming machines.
Mayor W L Jack Howard explains a Monroe street resurfacing plan will save property owners money over time. He cites engineered studies showing 47 streets would deteriorate soon if delayed, with front foot costs rising from 1.85 to 2.50 dollars on larger streets. About 200 property owners attended a council protest meeting.
MEMPHIS AP The Bartlett High dispute ends with Principal John Barnes authorized to discipline pupils with seven whacks using a maple paddle. Judge Willard Dixon supports the act citing state authority granting teachers disciplinary rights while students are in their care.
The massive colonnaded tribune where Hitler reviewed followers is being demolished with five hundred charges. The debris will clear space for a large meeting hall, described by the Fuehrer as a stone guarantee of the thousand-year Reich.
A khaki clad gunman robbed Allied Finance Co. in Baton Rouge forcing about a dozen people to lie down. He seized up to 500 dollars after ordering staff to fill a green bag with cash and warned others to stay still for five minutes as he escaped roadblocks. The crime involved the loan manager L. C. Slidell and an automatic pistol.
State police kept an all night vigil outside the Collins Park home of Mr and Mrs George Rayfield after crowds, estimated at 300, dispersed with 12 troopers and four trained dogs. Two women were injured and 7 people arrested, while the Rayfields moved in earlier that day and faced ongoing harassment.
Actress Shirley MacLaine is cited twice in a single day. She is nominated for an Academy Award in Hollywood while in Millburn New Jersey she faces a registration ticket. The car was impounded until her husband Steve Parker arrived with the registration.
Federal Judge Edwin F. Hunter said he would rule within 48 hours on a preliminary injunction by The John A. Petty Co. of Longview Texas to stop Winnfield Louisiana from canceling its contract for sewer and water line work. Petty seeks about 465000 in unpaid costs of work totaling 1085964. city contends Petty breached by late completion and payroll misuse among other issues.
Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev held a four hour summit at a villa near Moscow. The talks followed Khrushchev’s sharp speech rebuffing a foreign ministers meeting and included plans for a Thursday Kremlin meeting before a Kiev trip.
Partly cloudy skies and cool to mild weather were on tap for northeast Louisiana tonight and tomorrow. Temperatures in Monroe yesterday ranged from 61 to 48 with a 47 low early today and a 55 high mid morning. Lows tonight 46 to 50 and tomorrow's highs 58 to 62 as east winds continue.
A five man LSU Agricultural Experiment Station team reports fire ant venom contains an antibiotic active against bacteria and mold. They also produced a contact insecticide from the venom and a method to drive ants to death along venom trails. Dr. Arthur Novak notes isolation of the antibiotic is the next step.
A 32 year old Bossier City bread route salesman, Joseph Patrick Healy Jr., died when his car veered off State Highway One near Shreveport and struck a tree. Police said a left rear tire blew out, the car crossed the highway, then hit a tree in a field. Healy died instantly, with multiple fatal injuries, while returning home after taking his wife to Natchitoches for her father’s death. Healy’s family survives with his wife, two children, a stepson, his father and a sister.
