The main event featured Charley Laye and Bernard Hodgemyer in a near fatal clash halted after four minutes as both refused to break holds. Referee Lloyd Scarborough and Bill Barney separated the fighters, while Jack Larue won the wrestle royal with a $25 bonus after Laye’s disqualification. Larue and Barney drew in the semi final after a 45 minute bout. Hodgemyer beat Laye for a fall before a rapid finish by Laye in the final exchange.
Joseph Bush, 25, a former Notre Dame football player, received treatment for injuries after a heavy piece of road equipment pinned him in Plainview. He lost control of the machine during the incident and was hospitalized.
Ralph Fields was elected president of the Rebel Baseball League of West Monroe to oversee a league allowing 15 year olds to join with 13 and 14 year olds. Cline Averrett named vice president and Elaine Newton secretary-treasurer, with Nathan Perkins as player agent and Lera Morgan as reporter. Other directors include Dalton Taylor Brady Morgan Dollie Broom C A Hammett and four coaches Bill Hammett Louis Wiggins Lynn Parker and Billy Watson. Player registration began and will continue for several days at Colossus Midlands 901 Cypress Street. Returning Dixie League players may skip registration. new talent must register. Next league meeting is March 10.
Fifteen of the 18 sub four minute milers have been invited to run the Miracle Mile at the Coliseum Relays in Los Angeles. Derek Ibbotson heads the bids with England, Australia, and Europe represented by stars such as Dan Waern, Herb Elliott, and Roger Moens. Elliott also accepted a bid for the Compton Invitational on June 6.
In Delhi Louisiana Central High School defeated Negreet 68 to 53 to end Negreet’s three year reign as Class C state champions. Katherine Blake scored 31 and Margaret Loftin 27 for Central while Rose Lovelady led Negreet with 36. Central advances to the state semi finals against the French Settlement Morrow winner.
Ogden High girls, 8 0 state champions, meet Bienville in Liddieville La this evening at 6 30 for a state championship quarter final playoff. The schedule shift lets Fort Necessity boys game with Pleasant Hill follow later in the evening.
Neville High School closes its regular basketball season at Tallulah with a freshmen game at 6:45 followed by the varsity contest. A girls game was cancelled. Expected starters include Fred Southerland and Joe Cage forwards, Neil McDonald center, Francis Genusa and Ronnie McNabb guards. Neville meets the winner of the Natchitoches Spring Hill game on March 4.
Raleigh sources list 19 college stars headed to the North-South All-Star game in Raleigh on March 28. Notables include Jack Paar of Kansas State Vern Suiton of Kentucky and Jack Quiggle of Michigan State.
