Two held in a double slaying at Jena, an officer and his son are dead. The incident prompted a police investigation and raised questions about the motives behind the killings. Local authorities are coordinating with state agencies for a full inquiry.
In Jena Louisiana two men Martin Jackson and Luther Pearson were wounded and captured after allegedly shooting state trooper Alis Floyd who died of heart wounds. Pearson was in critical condition and no charges were filed pending his condition. Floyd had earlier warned the men for drinking while driving.

In Santa Monica California George Martz aged 47 survived a heart stoppage during a February 14 stomach ulcer operation at Santa Monica Hospital. An anonymous surgeon and two colleagues massaged the heart 50 to 60 times a minute for 18 minutes until the heart resumed. Brain oxygen was interrupted for about two minutes at the outset but the patient is said to have an excellent chance of full recovery.
A seven state delegation led by Rep Passman urged Congress to approve President Truman's recommendation of 60 million dollars for flood control and navigation on the Lower Mississippi and tributaries. The group backs funds starting July and cites Army Engineers can complete needed work with that amount.
Southern Bell filed a petition with the Louisiana Public Service Commission seeking an average rise of about four cents a day per telephone. Company officials cited wage increases for over 8,000 Louisiana workers, higher federal corporate taxes, and increased costs for equipment and materials since 1949 as driving the request.

H. L. Moore of 601 Calypso street reported a burglar took clothing worth 157.45 from his home. The thief shaved using a clean bath cloth and drank a Coke during the theft, washing up as he cleaned the clothes. Entrance was gained by pulling a screen loose from a rear window.
The Louisiana Mississippi monument builders convention opened at the Virginia Hotel with Mayor John E. Coon delivering a welcome. Miss Nona Martin, president, opened the meeting as discussions covered cemeteries banning monuments and state sales tax. A. B. Clarkson was announced as guest speaker with other sessions and a banquet planned.
Italian star Sylvania Pampanini condemned aging male actors as unsuitable lovers saying Clark Gable and others would look ridiculous in a romantic role. Lauren Bacall defended older actors while Pampanini argued Hollywood needs younger, virile leads. Bacall called Pampanini’s remarks publicity questing and said old boys still have life.
