A steamship wreck off Broad Cove on Sunday results in the loss of over a hundred lives. Rescue crews and local authorities coordinate to recover survivors and identify victims amid rough seas and continuing search efforts.
Cape Race reports total deaths in the Florizel wreck stand at 102 with about forty survivors. Other accounts place survivors at forty from Prosperity’s rescue efforts. The vessel struck Broad Cove during a blizzard while sailing from St Johns to New York with cargo including cod and herring.
The Red Cross steamer Ilorizel with 77 passengers and 69 crew was wrecked near Road Cove 20 miles north of Cape Race after striking in a blizzard Sunday morning. Six crew were washed ashore with several bodies found, including Joseph Keen Robert Now and James Long. The ship carried many notable passengers including John Shannon Mann Maj Michael Sullivan Thomas McNeal Fred Smythe William Carle and others bound for Canada and New York. The cadets of the Newfoundland regiment were among the passengers headed to Toronto to join the Royal Flying Corps. The wreck prompted continuation on page three.
The third public hearing on sections of the proposed new charter is set for tonight at City Hall starting at 7 50. Discussion may reach tentative agreements on commissioner salaries and the commission manager provisions as Tulsa Oklahoma is noted as a larger example. Organized labor is seen as aloof from the charter talk amid talk of an open shop motive by the Citizens’ Committee in Monroe.
Negro suspect Lonnie Eaton is held in St Louis on a murder charge in the killing of Charlie McQuiller. The report notes Eaton was arrested and jailed awaiting further legal action.
Lonnie Eaton, a black man from St Louis, is reported arrested for the murder of Charlie McQuiller near Webb's store in the Colony on Nov 11. Eddie Smith of St Louis identified Eaton. a $75 reward for Eaton’s capture is to be collected from local parties.
Independent Socialist deputy Dr. Kohn accused in Cologne Volks Zeitung report of sparking uproar in the reichstag during debate on the peace treaty with Ukraine. He challenged claims about Russia Baltic provinces in a tense session.
A Berlin dispatch reports General Brujevitch appointed commander in chief of Russian armies, succeeding Krylenko and proclaimed dictator. He orders Russians to fight to the last, as political tensions rise in the telegram from London on February 25.
Inmates of Monroe district to close by ordinance March 5 as Alexandria police aim to arrest women of questionable repute from Monroe or Lake Charles. Lake Charles district closes Feb 25. A War Department telegram confirms expanded liquor prohibitions for soldiers and bootlegging crackdown.

Senate foreign relations will begin treaty discussions with Britain and Canada July ratification hoped.
Allied dispatch reports intensified German bombardment northwest of Toul with more guns and greater activity. Minor casualties include three slightly wounded as enemy patrols ventured near American outposts.
Inspector Heap announced eight un naturalized Germans who registered during the DOJ designated period. Names listed: Louis Krauss August Probest Charles Andrew Prenner Richard Hagen Carl Briehn Leopold Hirsch Jake Hirsch Julius Loeb. One more German registered with the postmaster, two registered with him. affidavits declare loyalty to the United States.
Associated Press report from Washington notes Senator McCumber denouncing Bolshevik surrender to Germany. He warns Bolshevik sentiment in America threatens democracy and calls out profiteers and slackers for not standing against them. He says only Central Powers collapse can save the Allies from defeat.
