President Carter received a mid east report from Secretary of State Vance and said this is a good year for a lasting Arab Israeli peace. Vance outlined his Israel tour and messages from regional leaders as Carter and key advisers gathered at the White House.

He denied killing Archbishop Janani Luwum, while claiming the archbishop and two ministers died in a Kampala crash amid alleged attempts to destabilize Uganda.
An Agriculture Department forecast says the national orange crop may exceed last year’s record by 3 percent despite Florida freeze losses. Growers dispute the estimate, citing lower yields, many fruit drop, and delayed price adjustments as orange juice prices rise. Separately, a wind event in Texarkana caused $75,000 in damage with store debris and downed lines as tornado watches and thunderstorm warnings spread through parts of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Northeast Louisiana.
