Representative Wilbur Mills introduces a plan to boost Social Security benefits by 20 percent starting June 1, replacing the House's 5 percent rise. The proposal linked to payroll tax cuts would lift average checks from 133 to 162 dollars, couples from 222 to 269, and widows from 114 to 153 per month, aiding about 26 million beneficiaries.

A trace rainfall was reported Tuesday.
River stages show a rise with Camden at 269.3 and 1.0 foot increase and Monroe at 40.42 with a 1 foot rise noted as current flood conditions.

New Census Bureau figures show Ouachita Parish median age at 24.9 years, down from 25.5 in 1960, driven by a rising 15 to 24 age cohort now 22,287 compared with 14,598 in 1960. The fertility ratio falls from 547 in 1960 to 386, higher than national 352 but lower than many regions.
A federal grand jury charged Maj. Gen. George Reed Doster and three subordinates with conspiring since March 1970 to solicit 3200 in political contributions from Air Guard officers for Alabama campaigns including George Wallace and Albert Brewer. The scheme used government facilities and threatened officers. Doster allegedly told a major to consider drastic options if contacted by the FBI.
