An explosion of a 12 inch gas main two miles north of Quanah Texas injured several and killed three men who were working in a trench to replace the line. Fire and flames hampered rescue efforts as crews investigated the blast cause.
Chicago February 23 George F Porter reputed millionaire capitalist and real estate dealer was found shot to death in his apartment police said a bullet wound in his forehead. Porter shot himself in the presence of his wife Mile Manziarly. He left three letters including one saying he had reached the end of the rope. He had been ill for some time. Porter was western treasurer of the Progressive National Committee in 1912.
House meets at noon to consider an appropriation bill conference report. Chicago lake diversion hearings resume before Special Master Hughes as the House judiciary committee resumes hearings on Judge Cooper impeachment charges. Appellants begin rebuttal in the government suit to recover additional taxes from former Ford stockholders.
The jury began deliberations on February 23 over the murder indictment of Ben Rudner charged in the death of Canton editor Don R. Mellett, courtroom proceedings detailing the case.
Patrolman Frederick Fox admitted entering a Fern Street soft drink shop after midnight and robbing owner Anthony Fraiali, tying him to a bed. Earlier statements varied as to accomplices. Ropeaux and Noonan were arrested with Noonan denying charges. Superintendent Healy suspended Fox pending police board charges. Patrolman Thomas Alvarez was suspended after a Canadian victim accused him of slugging and stealing $277.
Don ald Gillis editor of the Asheville Citizen died suddenly in Asheville at 57 after years of cold and asthma. He worked on several southern newspapers and was a bachelor. Funeral services will be held tomorrow.
Rebecca Bradley Rogers, UT Austin graduate and alleged bank bandit, will stand trial February 28 in Georgetown Williamson county for arson linked to burning a vacant Round Rock building to distract bank staff and enable looting. The case stems from a December incident and involves bank officials and grand jury indictments.

Richland parish reports its fourth gasser as the Louisiana Petroleum Corp test No 1 in section 22 17 6e reached 2408 feet tonight flowing 2 000 000 cubic feet of rich gas per day. The gas carries high gasoline content per A F Parker state conservation field man. Crews battled mud to prevent blowout as machinery was set and deeper drilling planned into the lower sand. Drilling restarts after Gulf Refinings earlier discovery gasser at Clear Lake with Cook and Parker accompanying the team.
Des Moines February 23. The Mid West Radio Congress opened a two day session with the aim to protect listeners and small stations. Francis Staustel of the Iowa Radio Listeners League said the Congress will act on stations using air for direct advertising and decide which shall stay on the air or be forced off. He added the group will defend small stations from domination by larger ones.

Italian aviator Commander Francesco De Pinedo landed near Fernando Noronha after a 12 hour nonstop Atlantic flight from Cape Verde aboard the seaplane Santa Maria. He planned to continue to Port Natal then to Port Natal and on toward North American and South American capitals as celebrations back home mark the feat.
Rio de Janeiro dispatches quote Commander Francesco De Pinedo saying his plane the Santa Maria was damaged in the bay of St Anton E making departure to the Brazilian mainland impossible for the present.
Authorities seized a $100,000 distillery near Tomahawk with extensive equipment and a stockpile of alcohol valued at about $1,980,000 in three months of operation. Five men were arrested after a raid that also found a large arsenal and two women with children at the scene. A second seizure near Kenosha recovered a 5,000 gallon daily capacity still and vats worth about $25,000 as moving vans carried dismantled equipment toward Milwaukee Chicago St Paul Minneapolis Green Bay Oshkosh and Madison.
Flood waters from the Pearl River reached 80 feet, flooding homes on the south city area and a mile of east bank territory. BranDon road stands inundated with backwater flooding rear business districts and delaying truck unloading. Fair grounds and several exhibit buildings are submerged four to five feet, and Amite street to the fair grounds is blocked by water. Highway and farm damage expected as rivers rise further.
Major Tadeo Larre-Borres, flying from Italy to Montevideo, landed in Malaga at 11 10 this morning. He planned to proceed to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands but would alter course to land on the African mainland if troubled.

New York. A four decade mystery over the disappearance of Archduke Johann may end with the possible identification of John Orth who died in 1924. Orth reportedly told Mrs. Charlotte Fairchild he sent a Vatican letter about Crown Prince Rudolph’s fatal shooting at MeyerlIng. The letter was to be opened on February 23 1927.
After an all night session the Senate secured a quorum at 9 07 this morning and the filibuster against the Boulder Canyon dam bill resumed. Senator Phipps led the opposition as Senators Ashurst Cameron and Johnson pressed to force a vote before adjournment tonight.
Seminole operators faced another day of waiting as a five member committee appointed by the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas association works on a curtailment plan. The panel, led by Ray Collins, will review daily production and pipeline capacity to decide normal allowed output for leases and operators.
Louisiana and Arkansas crude prices drop 15 to 39 cents effective yesterday for fields in Caddo Bulli bayou Homer Haynesville Desoto Crichton. Top price now $2.31 with range down to $1.35. other firms had not matched the cut.
