West Monroe GI Crushed To Death In Pasadena Plant Blast
A massive explosion at Champion Paper & Fibre Co in Pasadena Texas injured six workers and caused a runaway fire in two acid tanks. The blast near the Ship Channel shattered nearby buildings, halted traffic in the Washburn tunnel, and drew fire units from Pasadena Houston Galena Park Jacinto City Baytown and South Houston. Officials identified the injured as Red Kirkland Charles Coons Lee Clements Clem Stiles G T Roberts and Jewel McClanahan.

Sallie Graham Lacy Humble 94, longtime Monroe city school educator, died in St. Francis Hospital. Born August 30, 1863 at Boscobel plantation Quachita parish, she married Robert Francis Humble in 1890. Survived by husband, sons John R. and Robert F. Humble, daughter Sallie L. Pvt. Charles B. Smith a 21 year old West Monroe soldier and 1956 Louisiana Tech graduate was killed when the car he rode in rear ended a lumber truck on highway 80 about 20 miles west of Jackson. He was en route home from Fort Rucker Alabama and pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital in Jackson. He is survived by his parents and a sister.
