Washington February 22 AP One director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation testified to senate investigators that he departed from standard procedure to aid a personal friend who later became an RFC director. William F.E. Willett said he assigned the RFC examiner who reviewed a $300000 loan to Harrington and Richards Arms Co Worcester Massachusetts in which Rowe was principal owner.
Committees question Willett after he admits performing a personal favor for Judge Rowe by assigning a loan examiner. He denies consciously yielding to influence while acknowledging bias toward a friend, and lawmakers challenge the propriety of RFC directors departing from standard procedures.
London Feb 22 Bevan met with heads of three rail unions in a bid to avert a 600000 strong strike threatening Britain with a major industrial shutdown. Unions demand an extra 225 million pounds yearly. they seek 12 million pounds while the executive offers 9.25 million.
Baton Rouge Feb 22 Lt Gov William J Dodd said Gov Earl Long is a good man but tired and ill in a brief two sentence phone comment. Dodd said he may run for governor but it is too early to announce while Long plays down a political break.

Lake George New York February 22 a five year old boy Reid Henderson was saved from drowning after plunging through ice. Mrs Alger Mason 33 dived into icy water and pulled him to shore where he was revived after fifteen minutes of artificial respiration. reported by Dr Bernard Selinger. Reid is the son of Mr and Mrs William Henderson.
The Louisiana Department of Revenue announces a second extension for automobile and truck license purchase to March 9. Manager C R Tidwell notes Feb 21 was original and the crowd caused the delay. Those who buy by March 9 save the $1 late fee.
Taipei Formosa February 22. The China Union Press claims 200000 Communist troops wounded in Korea and 500000 Chinese casualties. The U.S. 8th Army reports over 115000 Red casualties in ground actions from January 25 to February 20.
The Air Force and the Atomic Energy Commission announced the completion of the first phase of NEPA, the nuclear energy for propulsion of aircraft study. They said other nuclear powered flight projects will continue, with next phase likely led by GE’s gas turbine division in Lockland Ohio. The project, directed by Fairchild, involved nine engine firms and the Navy, with Oak Ridge facilities to be repurposed.
