Officials report doubled corn yields in Louisiana aiding farm incomes. Researchers credit improved seeds and weather conditions. farmers anticipate continued gains this season across parishes and markets.
Prof H M Cottrell argues the Mississippi Valley can prosper by making corn the dominant crop. He cites yields of 60 to 75 bushels per acre with strong seed, good soil prep, and modern cultivation, despite drought impacts in 1911. He urges profitable farming to draw ambitious youth and fund roads, schools, and churches in rural areas.
In Boston on February 22 Dr Hugh Cabot testified that Mrs Lois Barnett Rantoul, granddaughter of James Russell Lowell, is emotionally fit to care for her two daughters Harriet and Mabel. She seeks custody and a legal separation from her husband Edward L Rantoul, a banker, while he pursues custody and resists divorce. The record notes her admitted intellectual sympathy for her condition.

Nathan B. Goff of the United States Court of Appeals, a Republican, was elected United States Senator by West Virginia's Legislature joint session, replacing Clarence Watson. The deadlock ended after Gov elect Hatfield pressed for harmony and the caucus backed Goff on the fifteenth joint ballot, with 60 of 68 Republican votes cast. Two indicted Republicans did not vote and two were absent.
Four infantry regiments and the Fifth Brigade are held in readiness for service at Galveston. The mobilization signals heightened war posture and preparedness by U S forces in the area. Formal orders outline rapid deployment if required.

Mrs. Thos. P. Leathers, widow of a veteran steamboat captain, died in New Orleans on Friday. The body was transported to Natchez, Mississippi. She originated from Adams County, Mississippi and was formerly Miss Charlotte Claiborne.
In New Orleans on February 21 the bodies of Harold Andrews and Jesse McLaughlin were recovered from Harvey's canal after a fishing trip. The first clue appeared when hats floated on the water.
